budget minded 's budget minded System
IP Address: 184.76.54.135 Last Update: May 23, 2013 at 10:55:46
Amplifier: Panasonic SA-XR55
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): none
Speakers: Energy R-1
ports plugged
they don't accept banana plugs annoyingly enough, but are otherwise very nice for the price I paid.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: 1990s sony 5 disc DVD changer using the Panasonic's crisper DAC via generic video cable
Other Source(s): Psnasonic VHS player I don't use after my sony finally crapped out like everything they make
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Monster Cable 10 gauge with most of the pins pulled out and rubber jackets shredded. The amp end has new gold bananas, but I need spade lugs for the speakers and don't like pins.

The interconnects are generic mid-grade. I don't think cables are the best values for improvement.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): RF filtered outlet strip
Tweaks: I bought a cheap PC power strip with RF filtering. It might help with some of the former class D edge in the NHT system
Room Size (LxWxH): 16' 3.5" x 11' 8" x 7' 7.5"
Room Comments/Treatments: nothing yet, but I'd like to get into rockwool corner treatment over the egg crate foam I used to have with my NHT system.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): my tastes are all over the map, and it's easier to say what I DON'T like.... most jazz, anger music (metal, gangsta, industrial & step etc.), modern country, opera, and bagpipes
System Goals/Comments: no neighbors
System Strengths: no boomy ports or excessive headache inducing bass, and what's there's tight and quick
System Weaknesses: I think the cabinets have just a bit of resonance at low volumes with the ports plugged, and the neutral nature of the Energy speakers and their revealing domes highlights the Panasonic detail ruthlessness that's perfect for soft domes.
Video/HT System: Integrated
TV/Projector: Element 31" 3/8" actual LCD
looked best for the entry level price at the digital switch, but it's colors aren't quite right and it does serious gradient artifacts
Sources (DVD/VCR): sony DVD changer
Panasonic VHS
Other HT Gear: Celestion Ditton 100
10" sealed wedge
4 x 12" sealed car subs
Paradigm electronic crossover
500w class D sub plate
12" DIY SQ+SPL 94dB+ sealed party speakers
Comments on HT System: I like speed detail and especially freedom from distortion, so I despise boomy ports that are just euphonic distortion. A snappy well damped driver (if not a lightning fast box free planar) thumps bass better without the overhang bassheads refuse to admit ports add. Someone puhleeese just post ports vs plugged waterfalls please!
