escapist 's Low Budget System
IP Address: 107.77.241.26 Last Update: March 11, 2021 at 17:16:29
Amplifier: Onkyo TX8511 receiver with phono input (receiver has a phono preamp)
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): none - (Onkyo receiver has a phono preamp)
Speakers: Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble III - three piece - two mini bookshelf speakers and a separate subwoofer
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Technics SL-PD8
Turntable/Phono Stage: Dual CS506 belt drive, suspended TT; auto stop with arm lift; Dual ultra low mass tonearm; Audio-Technica AT120E cartridge. Also have a Pickering XV-15/400E cart (1960s era) - mounted once - it works - sounds good.
Other Source(s): none
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Lampcord/standard
Tweaks: Use my tone controls - adding bass for LPs with weak bass. One of my speakers is on a tripod and I move that speaker here and there, back and forth.
Room Size (LxWxH): 25 x 17 x 7-3/4 feet
Room Comments/Treatments: Speakers positioned in the middle of large room in a half basement. Bookshelf speakers are close - ten feet from my sofa and the ottoman where I put my feet up. Subwoofer is sitting on the floor beside the sofa endtable. Room treatments include hard, bare floor, a record collection in open top boxes and a view outside through a double window.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Rock (60s, 70s, 80s); classical (fond of piano and looking now for string quartets); pop (Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Dionne Warwick, Linda Ronstadt), jazz (too few - Weather Report, Phil Woods, Sergio Mendez and Brazil '66, Gato Barbieri, Charlie Parker).
System Goals/Comments: Relaxation and nostalgia
System Strengths: Low cost, simplicity. I like the finger lift on the Dual headshell - the lift comes straight out and has a right angle turned down tab at the end - makes hand cueing precise. I like the auto TT shut off.
System Weaknesses: Could be a bit louder.
Video/HT System: None
