Allan's System
Last Update: October 04, 1999 at 10:37:23 IP Address: 216.26.28.112
Amplifier: B&K EX4420 (dual monoblock MOSFET whatever that is) 200wpc@8ohm / 350wpc@4ohm
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): B&K Pro10 MC with mm/mc phono stage and passive option
Speakers: Magnepan MMG
NHT SW2Pi sub woofer
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: JVC XL-Z1050
Turntable/Phono Stage: Project 1.2 with Grado Red cart
Other Source(s): singing in the shower
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Jon Risch's DIY Belden 89259 ics and 6-braided (sort of) plenum cat5 speaker cables
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): ~1500 lbs of concrete and cinder blocks supporting a DIY rack made from 1" thick particle board countertop. Speakers are sitting on 16" of concrete block and TT sits on 8" of block.
Tweaks: maybe the concrete blocks?
Room Size (LxWxH): 15 x 12 x 8
Room Comments/Treatments: Fully treated with Jon Risch absorbers and bass traps. This accounts for about 50 percent of the listening quality - without these treatments, I'd be listening to Bose or worse.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): just about everything but rap. Rock is on the out, classical is moving in, and female vocals are on the top of the list. Love the Big Bands, all the old Jazz greats (newer jazz so-so) and have occasional flings with New Age when the sleeping pill bottle is empty.
System Goals/Comments: I'll be exploring tubes within a month or so.
System Strengths: This may be one of the best examples of what can be done for ~5,000.00. It's extremely musical, has exceptional low-volume detail (important to me) and for some unknown reason, bass is very tight and coupled nicely to the Maggies.
System Weaknesses: Soundstage is weak - I believe it's due to the small room and the relatively near-field listening position. Imaging is exceptional, but everything pretty much stays between the speaks.
Video/HT System: None

Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: none
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): none
