13th Duke of Wymbourne's Stately Music System
Last Update: October 16, 2001 at 22:45:22 IP Address: 198.62.9.29
Amplifier: Presently using one amp per channel from a pair of Meridian M3 active speakers.
DIY mono blocks to follow ..... eventually.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Deltec CTA80.
Deltec (aka DPA Digital) from Wales, now sadly defunct. CTA80 was their first product of early eighties vintage.
Speakers: Quad ESL-57. Late model pair (serial #50k+)with removed stuffing and raised on rather stylish (if I may say so) DIY stands.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Wadia 830
Turntable/Phono Stage: Linn LP12+Ittok+AT OC-9. LP12 is early eighties vintage with Lingo PSU and completely updated just one month before Cirkus kit announced. Dang!
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Speaker cables - ChrisVH CAT-5, full 27 pair ~ 5' long.
Interconnects - twisted pair using Belden 1506 co-ax inner cores a la Jon Risch.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Equipment mounted on Tripod (older UK design) welded steel design. Modified to suspend all shelves from an inner-tube a la Suspense Rack/Siesmic Sink Stand.
Tweaks: Experimenting with sand damping under components.
Room Comments/Treatments: Room is large with cathedral ceiling and solid floor. Speakers are placed well into room and listening position is far from back wall. No treatments.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): XTC, U2, REM, Belle & Sebastian, The Smiths, Elvis Costello, Lou Reed, Talking Heads, 10,000 Maniacs, Lloyd Cole, Radiohead and many, many more.
Baroque chamber music - Vivaldi, Corelli & Bach.
Classical - Mozart (of course), Haydn string quartets.
System Goals/Comments: To forget about the system and just enjoy the music. The quads make a really big contribution to the enjoyment of anything played through the system.
System Strengths: Exciting but not fatiguing, brings out the best in all recordings so everything is enjoyable.
System Weaknesses: Quad bass good quality, poor quantity.
DIY dipole sub-woofer project coming one day....
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Interests - listening to music, sport, comedy and The Archers (UK radio soap).
Occupation - RF IC designer.
