rode's Home Brew (rode=Rod Elliott) System
Last Update: December 01, 1999 at 04:51:23 IP Address: 210.8.224.2
Amplifier: Power amps: 4 x 75W biamped. Own design
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Own design: valve (tube) using 2 x 12AU7 valves. Gain 10dB
Speakers: Own design: 300mm woofer (sealed) with separate power amp, 120mm midrange + tweet with separate amp. Crossovers: electronic 300Hz between bass and mid+high, passive 6dB from mid to high.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Modified Pioneer PD5100 (original opamps swapped out for Burr-Brown devices)
Turntable/Phono Stage: Technics SL5200 TT on concrete plinth. Phono stage is dual stage (own design) - passive HF EQ and active modified RIAA LF. Dynavector MC cartridge (how I love that pickup - it is wonderful)
Other Source(s): Very ordinary tuner and cassette deck (rarely used)
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: All cables are hand made. Speakers use standard heavy duty "Figure-8", and all low level interconnects are low loss coax.
Tweaks: Modified bass amp output impedance to extend bottom end of sealed cabinets (provides proper Theile-Small Qts not possible with zero ohms).
Room Size (LxWxH): 6.0m x 3.5m x 2.7m
Room Comments/Treatments: None
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Rock, "Alternative" (whatever that is supposed to mean), classical (various in all cases).
System Goals/Comments: Speakers desperately need an upgrade. Mids and tweeters are not to the standard I would like, and will be replaced. Still debating if woofers should be changed out as well, and maybe a sub for that last octave.
System Strengths: Clean, and very detailed, even at outrageous SPL (up to 120dB! - ouch).
System Weaknesses: Room needs treatment, and mids and highs could be that little bit better.
Video/HT System: None
TV/Projector: Standard old telly. No HT at this stage. I can send the sound through the main system, but most video/TV soundtracks are fairly ordinary.

Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Audio design and electronics in general has been occupation and hobby for years (on and off). Currently employed as "Technical Training Engineer" (at least that's what I was called last time I looked :-)
