Michael G.'s It's a start System
Last Update: December 26, 2001 at 02:53:19 IP Address: 24.4.254.2
Amplifier: Marantz SR-8000 A/V Receiver
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): none
Speakers: Boston Acoustics CR-9, PV-600 Sub
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Pioneer DV-525
Turntable/Phono Stage: Technics SLQ-30 (early 80's plastic fantastic DD), Grado Prestige Green, Creek OBH-8 MM phono
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Monster Cable XP, RS interconnects
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): 10 dollar computer surge protector
Room Size (LxWxH): 20' x 14' x 9'
Room Comments/Treatments: In one word, HORRIBLE. Ceramic tile floor, mini blinds, sparse furnishings. Reflections everywhere. But I'm working on it.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Classic Rock, Blues, Breakbeat, Ambient, Trance, World Music, Some Classical and Pop as well. I'm getting aquainted with Jazz. (Miles, Coltrane, Brubeck) I like all kinds of music.

But no Rap or Country thank you.

System Goals/Comments: I want my system to make music. My first upgrade will be a higher quality analog front end. I'm pining for a VPI HW-19 Jr. Next will be the speakers, followed by the amplification and finally a dedicated pre amp. Hopefully by then, the digital format wars will be over and I can get something more suitable than my DVD player.
System Strengths: The soundstage and imaging are decent but only in the horizontal plane. Depth and height are AWOL. It is fairly dynamic at modest listening levels.
System Weaknesses: So-So clarity and detail. Colored tonality, musicality, not much presence, coherency

You know, just the little things. :)

Video/HT System: Integrated
TV/Projector: RCA 31" Direct View
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: Marantz SR-8000
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): Boston Acoustics CR-9 front, VR-10 Center, CR-6 surround, PV-600 sub
Sources (DVD/VCR): Pioneer DV-525
Other HT Gear: PS2
Comments on HT System: I have always loved music and thought a HT would satisfy my tastes. I have since developed my listening skills and would appreciate a higher quality, dedicated, 2 channel system. However, I am very happy with my HT; it is all I need or want. The only upgrade I have planned is a widescreen HDTV.
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Astronomy, Cooking, Reading, Travel
