gadsons's Occasional Use Solid State That's on the Market System
Last Update: January 15, 2002 at 22:50:04 IP Address: 64.252.66.93
Amplifier: Spectral DMA-80 Monoblocks (factory not bridged)
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Spectral DMC-20 Series 1
Speakers: Wilson Watt2/Puppy2. I'm looking for Puppy Paws so if you've got them to go email me.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Naim Audio CDX
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Spectral-MIT MI330 Ultralinear CD to Pre / Spectral-MIT MI330 Ultralinear Pre to Amp / Spectral-MIT 750 Ultralinear Series II Speaker Cable
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Chang Lightspeed 6400 ISO for source and Pre. Separate dedicated 20 Amp Lines with hospital grade outlets for each Amp and for source/Pre
Tweaks: Lots of Sorbothane. Sorbothane mats between Watt and Puppy is THE tweak for older Wilsons.
Room Size (LxWxH): 20 x 12 x 7
Room Comments/Treatments: By far the most money I have spent on any aspect of my system. Walls angled at the intersections to eliminate right angle corners. Double rocked with sound absorbtion channeling between the sheetrock layers and special insulation in the wall. Insulated floor and carpeted.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): All
System Goals/Comments: Solid state doesn't get any better than Spectral, and Spectral doesn't get much better than this, but I'm back into tubes now. If I don't sell this setup I'll upgrade the DMC-20 to a Series 2 and that's about it.
System Strengths: Wide open, as smooth and natural as solid state can be. Fatser than a Hungarian Viszla.
System Weaknesses: Just a touch bright and hard compared to tubes. Finicky. Even with all that I invested in my power in this room, the Spectral picks up every little bit of line noise in the house, amplifies it, and plays it back for me on my Watt/Puppies.
Video/HT System: Separate
