MBK's Diatone Big Blue System
Last Update: March 20, 2002 at 05:18:21 IP Address: 203.125.250.83
Amplifier: Rotel integrated used as preamp to active EQ and active X-O with BB OPA 548 chip amplifiers (bi-amped 2-way speakers)
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): -
Speakers: DIY two way with double 10" Vifa down from 310 Hz and single Diatone 610 above used as full range. Active X-O, bi-amplified (see above). The speakers are dynamic dipoles, so EQ is necessary to compensate dipole roll-off.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Rotel RCD955AX, tweaked output
Turntable/Phono Stage: none
Other Source(s): TEAC tape deck, Denon Tuner
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: interconnects: Radio Shack
speaker cable: zip wire
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): DIY power filter
Tweaks: CD player modified to non-oversampling, i/v stage in testing, currently using BB OPA 2134
Room Comments/Treatments: room with many corners, concrete, very hard to get right listening position
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): all sorts: "world" (African, Indian, Cuban, etc); Blues; voices; Alt. Rock, some Rap, some Pop, some classic Rock, classical: mostly smaller ensembles and classic guitar pieces
System Goals/Comments: High resolution, naturalness, dynamic capability to reproduce music accurately, power flat (controlled dispersion), clean bass and mids through dipoles, clean highs through good source/amp/driver; non-annoying imaging (better less imaging than a fake one), no spectral contamination, low IMD (large orchestral pieces should remain detailed)
System Strengths: Clean bass, natural mids, integration
System Weaknesses: mathematically I can calculate that my system can no way reproduce accurate dynamics (+- 30 dB from average listening level): not enough excursion/power handling of both amps and speaker drivers. This I intend to fix through a second full range driver and a tweeter. The tweeter should also alleviate problem number 2, dispersion control: the Diatones as large cones will beam at >2500 Hz. Also due to above limitations large orchestral pieces are currently less natural and detailed than I wished.
