Sasquatch's Cheapster System System
Last Update: April 28, 2004 at 19:28:33 IP Address: 12.216.205.247
Amplifier: Antique Sound Labs AV-8 with Svetlana tubes
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): None. L-pad to allow digital volume to be run nearly maximum.
Speakers: Polk Audio RT25i, Bass drivers replaced with MCM 55-1870. Modpodged bass drivers, biwired, crossover removed

Grado SR-60

Sources:
CD Player/DAC: SONY D-191 Portable with source picked up at chip output (i.e., no opamps or output coupling caps), hot glue to dampen on crystal
Turntable/Phono Stage: Someday
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Speaker cable is Radio Shack 22 gauge magnet wire twisted with drill, biwired. ICs = 30 gauge magnet wire fed through cotton fiber tubing with plain RCA RCA plugs. Use homeade aire inductor to prevent oscilation
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): None
Tweaks: Homemade speaker stands
Amps:
Auricap input caps, Snubber filter on powersupply, soft recovery diodes, Auricap output caps, replaced output trans with old Kenwood 7189 model from salvaged amp, matched tubes on top of shared biasing resistor (eliminates degenerative feedback and need for cathode bypass capacitors), batter bias on the input triode, resistors replaced throughout.
Speakers: Biwired speaker with soldering replacing the speaker terminals, Dammer Varnish on speaker cones,
RC across each speaker terminal to filter out HF and to dampen tweater ringing, replaced driver with MCM-1870 drives treated with modge podge. Tweaters use a constant delay LC filter in series with a piece of wire to recover time information from digital outs.
Room Comments/Treatments: None
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Rock, Old Country, Jazz, classical
System Goals/Comments: My goal is to assemble the best sounding, least expensive system possible in audio.
System Strengths: Dead flat FR (except 500 hz resonance), good vocals, excellent air and soundstaging, musical, inexpensive, non-fatiguing, OK detail, bouncy bass.
System Weaknesses: Lack of presence, still a hint of 'digital sound' in upper frequencies, detail retrieval isn't perfect, lack of perceptual integration between the woofer and tweater.
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Assistant Professor of Experimental Psychology
