lumoo@aol.com's Lumoo: Bob's Garage Sale Not-Quite-High-End Audio System System
Last Update: November 04, 2002 at 20:18:15 IP Address: 64.12.96.73
Amplifier: Yamaha RX-V1200 (Because of it's 6 preamp outputs.)
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): I use the Yamaha only for the Preamp section.
2 Lexicon CP-1s.(E-bay, under $100 each)
Speakers: Front:Magnepan MGII and SMG,one each for the right and left channels ($525 total);Pyramid Metronome 7 for side speakers: Klipsch KG.5($25)for rear speakers; Two powered subwoofers: Infinity Servo subwoofer ($35) JBL PL12 ($75)
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Sony SACD/DVD DVP-NS500V, Toshiba SD-4800 DVD-Video/Audio Player. Harmon-Kardon HD 7325
Turntable/Phono Stage: Pioneer Quartz Direct Drive PL-707, Otrofon Cartridge ($5)
Other Source(s): Nakamichi MR-2 Tape deck ($15)
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Lamp cord.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): None
Tweaks: The Magnepans are hung from the ceiling (I have cats), in an arch, toed in slightly to face the 'sweet spot' What makes the most dramatic differece are the Lexicons. The 'panorama'effect produces greater width and depth to the sound and a feeling of enhansed spaciousness. The 'Ambiance Mode' generates early hall reflections and sends them to side speakers (Lexicon feels the side reflections are much more important to a sense of realism than rear hall sounds. They are right). Unfortunately one unit can not perform both Panorama and Ambiance at the same time. So I decided to try two units hooked together, each to it's appointed task. It works. With levels of the side speakers adjusted properly, the effect is thrilling. You are there.
Room Size (LxWxH): 20 x 14 x vaulted
Room Comments/Treatments: Live End/Dead End Room. Corning Glass used to make acoustical panels. I built these into folding screens and used to back paintings, etc.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Primarily the classics, particularly the big orchestras stuff (Barhms,Bruckner, Mahler, Stravinsky, etc. Let the walls shake!). Jazz
System Goals/Comments: The most realistic sound within reason.
System Strengths: Sound stage, sense of realism on well-recorded material.
System Weaknesses: You guys tell me, just keep it cheap.
Video/HT System: None
