mwb's Hi Fi System
Last Update: November 07, 2002 at 08:38:26 IP Address: 62.31.224.3
Amplifier: QUAD 606 power amp, heavily modified and upgraded by Russ Andrews and Audio Laboratories Leeds
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): hand built purist audio valve passive pre-amp with active phone stage
Speakers: Jamo concert 8's (16ohm) standing on Atacama 24 stands filled with 'soundbytes', which are standing on slabs of marble which are standing on Russ Andrews' jumbo oak cones
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: QUAD 67 with Trichord 3 clock and Perpetual Technolgies 1A digital correction engine and 3A dac
Turntable/Phono Stage: modified DAIS turntable with ZETA tonearm and Len Gregory 'Musicmaker' mm cartridge. The turntable is fed by a Martin Bastin power conditioner. I play with a large brass puck fitting over the spindle and the centre of the record
Other Source(s): Leak Troughline tuner with 'one thing' outboard stereo decoder. Upgraded AIWA ADF850 cassette deck
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Biwired with Kimber 4 and 8TS speaker cable. All Kimber interconnects
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Russ Andrews' 'torlyte' equipment rack, Russ Andrews' superpurifier and silencer, all top of the range Kimber powercords and eight gang extension. The system is on its own ring main.
Tweaks: A lot of Peter Belt foils, message labels, creams, pens, etc, etc, on all the equpment, stands, and elsewhere in the room and house. Most of the equipment stands on Russ Andrews' oak cones. The whole Torlyte rack stands on two large slabs of marble
Room Size (LxWxH): 9mtrs x 4.5mtrs x 3mtrs
Room Comments/Treatments: see tweaks above. The speakers are half way down the long length of the room. They are too close to the wall, but that is one thing my partner insists on. Polished wood floor with large rug. Lots of bookshelves with books on the walls and shelves and shelves of vinyl
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Bob Dylan, Daevid Allen (Gong and Soft Machine)Johnny Cash, Miles Davis, Ben Webster, Duke Ellington. Basically a wide range from Rock to Jazz to modern classical, electronic. I just love listening to music!
System Goals/Comments: As an arts therapist I use sound often in my work and am fascinated with the way that the better sounding my system the more of an effect it seems to have on my clients
System Strengths: The vinyl does, I think, sound superb.
System Weaknesses: Still not there with cd, though the Perpetual Technologies gear has made an enormous difference.
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: I work at a university as Head of Arts Therapies programmes and research, am a dramatherapist and am interested in theatre and the arts in general, of course, and collect books and vinyl.
