geof's Work in progress System
Last Update: April 26, 2005 at 19:47:17 IP Address: 66.167.234.115
Amplifier: Two AKSA-100s with Nirvana upgrades, which are kits produced by the Australian company Aspen Amplifiers (formerly Printed Electronics). Each channel is rated at just over 100 watts into 8 ohms. Each amplifier is a stereo pair, giving me a total of four channels for biamping. The AKSAs are excellent.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Adcom GTP-502- OK solid state preamp with tuner included. Tuner isn't the best- reception kinda weak even with antenna. Slightly unbalanced. I haven't heard other preamps in the system so I have nothing to compare it with.

I am currently constructing the GK-1 hybrid SS/tube preamp, also by Aspen Electronics. This will replace the Adcom preamp, however I will still leave the Adcom in the system for it's tuner.

Speakers: B&W Nautilus 802. about 90dB at 1 watt / 1 meter. -6dB at 27Hz according to B&W.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Adcom GCD-750. Good CD player, although I may upgrade in the next few years.
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: DIY Cable with cross-connected Belden 89259 a-la Jon Risch. The cables are directly soldered to the amplifier PC boards. Interconnects are simple Monster Cable. Will try making DIY interconnect w/ Belden 89259. The AKSA-100N amps were soldered using Ultraclear Wonder Solder.
Room Size (LxWxH): 25' x 12' x 8'
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Mostly Jazz, Classical, and various Electronic. Basically 'Everything except country'. Actually with this system I am learning to like other music I have not really appreciated before.
System Goals/Comments: My goal is to produce a sensual auditory experience that relaxes me, fills my mind with colorful images, and inspires me to new heights.

Now comes true confessions: I bought and put together this system in several acts of madness, in the few months after my father passed away and I had the urge to be 'irresponsible' with a part of the inheritance. I started out with the goal of not exceeding $4k (hahaha!) and bought the above amp and preamp, plus a Sony DVD-CD and B&W CDM7-NTs. Upgrade fever hit me, and I traded the CDM7's for N804's, and the DVD-CD for the above Adcom CDP. Still somewhat mad, I later on traded up to N802's. Recently I decided to reward good work by upgrading the preamp and amp. I just added two AKSA-100Ns to biamp the speakers, and am constructing a new preamp.

System Strengths: Speakers and Amps.
System Weaknesses: Interconnects, Acoustics, Preamp.
Video/HT System: None
