steve.austin's Vinyl and Tubes System
IP Address: 70.114.140.235 Last Update: December 16, 2009 at 11:02:16
Amplifier: Cary SLA-70 Class A 35w/ch.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): AES AE-3 modified with GZ34 tube rectification.
Speakers: ProAc 1SC's + two (2) REL Strata II subwoofers (stereo subs - BIG improvement).
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: California Audio Labs Delta/Alpha (w/Brimar CV4004's). Wadia i70 iPod dock through a Monarchy DIP 24/96 to the Alpha DAC (all tunes in Apple Lossless format, not MP3).
Turntable/Phono Stage: Wilson-Benesch Circle/Benz M0.9/EAR MC3 Step-up/Audio Research PH-3 (w/Amperex Bugle-Boy 6DJ8's). I have a Lyra Lydian Beta on the way ...
Other Source(s): McIntosh MR65 (not MR65B) tube tuner retubed with some premium NOS Amperexes, Valvos, GE's and RCA's. Sounds soooo good.
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Kimber 8TC speaker cables/Kimber PBJ throughout (as well as Quicksilver silver ICs from DAC to pre-amp and from pre-amp to amp). Signal Cable and Audio Magic Power Cables. Illuminations D60 and Orchid AES/EBU digital IC's.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Adcom and Monster power conditioners.
Tweaks: Lots of NOS tube rolling. Turntable on a Townshend Seismic Sink. Versalabs Red Rollers on IC's between pre-amp and amp.
Room Size (LxWxH): 18 x 20 x 9
Room Comments/Treatments: Just the furniture and a large oil-on-canvas painting on the wall behind the 'listening position'.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Classic 50's & 60's jazz, 'alternative' rock, selected electronica (e.g. Aphex Twin), some classical.
System Goals/Comments: Lots of lp's and CD's but much prefer vinyl. I think I'm finally done -- finally sounds just like what I've been going for.
System Strengths: Recently admitted to myself that I actually love the tubey and euphonic sound over neutral and accurate, so have moved into the Class A Cary/AES realm, and listening is now more FUN to me. Stereo REL subs really flesh out the sound on ALL types of music, single most significant upgrade to my system. McIntosh tuner is an absolutely amazing-sounding source - wow! Only wish I had more decent FM choices.
System Weaknesses: ProAc's bottom out if I crank up bass-heavy music, but it's rare for me to do so, and it sounds sooo good on everything else that I hardly consider it a 'weakness'.
Video/HT System: Integrated
TV/Projector: LG 32LX1D 32' LCD Monitor, mounted on wall.
Sources (DVD/VCR): Inexpensive LG DVD (using HDMI interface) -- NICE!!
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Main Hobbies: Musician (drummer -- that counts as a musician, right?).
