Diego M's Bane of my Wife System
Last Update: March 29, 2003 at 09:48:50 IP Address: 152.163.188.227
Amplifier: Heavily modified B&K ST-140 (circa 1984)
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Melos SHA-1 & NYAL Minuet in A
Speakers: NHT 2.9 with one Sub 2
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Rotel 991 / MSB DAC
Turntable/Phono Stage: AR (circa 1983) AQ-PT5 tonearm, Monster Omega
Musical Fidelity dual mono phono amps
Other Source(s): NHT sub 2 electronic crossover
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Mish mash of Audioquest, Cardas, Monster and DIY. Speakers have been bi-wired with AQ Ruby (low) and Tara Space&Time (mid/high), but I am building the J. Risch UBYTE 89259.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Various DIY power cords, 3 dedicated 10 AWG 20 amp circuits on IG's. I just built the Trancendant Sound balanced power supply but have not used it yet. Also Monster 1000.
Tweaks: Everything is loaded with clay, EAR Composite of various types, Black Diamond cones on amp and pre, component cabinets have been coated with EMF spray and undercoating type material(for damping), etc, etc.
Room Comments/Treatments: I am building a room based on the Tom Hidley approach. The room will be symetrical but without any directly opposed surfaces and three hexagonally oriented walls at the front and angled side walls. The new walls are floated from the floor, staggered stud, with stringers. This essentially forms a room with two sets of walls. The room will be air tight with two solid wood entrance doors, one foot apart. The cabinet is custom built and recessed into the wall behind the listener, five feet wide, three deep. Access is through hinged drop down back panel in standup crawlspace. The two Salamander racks are completely isolated from mechanical vibration via holes through floor of the cabinet and sunk into the earth. You can literally pound on the cabinet three inches from the TT and not effect it. The cabinet is solid cherry, with 3/4 inch doors that seal tight, with a 1/2 layer of Poron behind. Speaker cables will be routed through copper conduit as is the DIY AC (10AWG) to the subwoofer. The walls will be a work in progress. I am starting with cork flooring over slab concrete, sound board on lower four feet of walls and heavy duty sheet rock on top four feet. There will be a layer of roof underlayment and fiberglass insulation behind. The ceiling has upholstered Sonex over the forward section, providing a dead end / live end effect.
The room RT has all three of the Sabine, Eyring and Kuttruff equations within 'ideal' spec's from 20 to 5120 Hz. The wall panels, though heavy 4 x 8 sections, are designed to swap in and out, so experimentation with Helmoltz resonators, etc. can be had. I also have a lot of ASC Tube Traps, 1/4 rounds and 1/2 rounds, RPG Skylines and other room treatments to play with. Lastly, a sub-panel with both 220 and 110 will be installed at the room itself in the next month. This is obviously a dedicated 100% 2-channel gig. The only things on the floor are the speakers, the sofa and any relevant sound treatments. I am ready for a straight jacket.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Blues / rock (Richard Thompson, Zevon, Zappa), late 19th century Romantic Composers (Liszt, Chopin, et al.)
System Goals/Comments: I love making mistakes and learning from them. I also enjoy achieving results by my own hand that would cost many thousands otherwise, at which point I raise a toast to the Audio Industry Emperor and ask him politely to put some shorts on, or at least close his robe a bit...
System Strengths: My own goosebump factor.
System Weaknesses: At the moment, nothing is running while I finish the room...
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: This is all consuming. No time for a real life...
