ChasG's Charles' Home Brew System
Last Update: May 12, 2003 at 12:10:47 IP Address: 216.37.66.114
Amplifier: My amp is a home-brew with a 12 AX7 and two 6BQ5s per channel, in a single ended, zero feedback design. It puts out about 4 Watts.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): None. Running a CD player directly to a switch box containing a simple R-C filter to divide the frequency at 110 Hz. It then comes out at this line-level below 110 Hz to a Hafler solid state which drives a pair of Voight Pipe type columns containing 6 1/2" drivers for bass. The range from 110 Hz goes out to my tube amp and drives a Fostex FE164 in a small cabinet mounted atop the bass speakers on each side. It is an aperiodic design. None of the speakers have a crossover on them.
Speakers: Fostex-FE164
MCM 6 1/2" drivers
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: NAD CD Player. Very old, put high quality resistors and caps in the signal path. Cut out the filter output transistors for better sound.
Other Source(s): DVD player audio into the switch box.
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: 16 AWG copper wire.
Tweaks: Foam ring behind whizzer cone of the Fostex full range drivers. All metal film resistors and good film capacitors in signal paths.
Room Size (LxWxH): 16' x 13' x 10'
Room Comments/Treatments: wall mural, carpet and couch
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Smooth Jazz, 60's-80's rock. New Age.
System Goals/Comments: Have had dozens of speakers, amps, etc. Very, very content presently.
System Strengths: Very clean highs. Good midrange due to the enclosed, small cabinet for the Fostex Full Range driver. Using a Full Range driver in a large cabinet for mids and bass ruin the speed of the upper mids; from my experience.
System Weaknesses: None I have found.
Video/HT System: None
TV/Projector: RCA 35"
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: None
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): None
Sources (DVD/VCR): Philips DVD
Other HT Gear: none
Comments on HT System: OK
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Work for a company building, repairing biomedical electro-mechanical products.
