CY - Toronto's A Modest Music System System
Last Update: August 24, 2003 at 23:16:20 IP Address: 64.229.64.65
Amplifier: Acurus DIA-150
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): None
Speakers: Reference 3A MM De Capo
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: GamuT CD-1S
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Van den Hul The Second, Van den Hul D-102 Mk III, Van den Hul D-352 Hybrid (bi-wired)
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Van den Hul MainsStream, sinewave generators, Lovan Reference 22" Speaker stands, Lovan Classic II racks
Tweaks: Granite plinths under the De Capo's; lead/granite/vibrapod isolation under the GamuT
Room Size (LxWxH): 19' x 14' x 9'
Room Comments/Treatments: My room has a parquet wood floor and plaster walls; naturally bright and reverberant. I have a 9'x12' persian rug in the listening area, and a 4'x7' persian rug hanging on the rear wall, covering 2" acoustic foam. Bookshelves (including actual books) on both sides at the reflection point. I am currently in the process of adding more damping throughout the room, including the ceiling reflection, constrained by decor limitations (this is our living room). Ideas?
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): 'Classical' and Jazz; a smattering of contemporary electronica.

Bach cantatas, Beethoven string quartets, Brahms chamber music, Stravinsky ballets, Ligeti, Strauss, Palestrina, Mendelssohn, Britten, Piazzolla, Mahler;

twentieth-century opera - Poulenc, Stravinsky, Bartok, Berg...

Mingus, Garland, Miles...

Bjork, Radiohead, GusGus...

System Goals/Comments: To recreate the sound of real instruments. My musical training and frequent concert/rehearsal attendance make me choosy beyond my means.
System Strengths: Very revealing. Great dynamics. Powerful. No volume limitations. Swings. Makes music.
System Weaknesses: Very revealing. Doesn't do much bass below 40 hz. Harmonic presentation is on the lean side. Highs can be fatiguing with awful discs. MFD factor could be higher.
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: former pianist. current consultant.

Food, wine, cheese.

Gardening (herbs on the balcony).
