Crispin Steele's Main (& Only!) System System
Last Update: February 28, 2005 at 12:11:17 IP Address: 199.212.94.66
Amplifier: Blue Circle CS integrated
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): None
Speakers: Jean-Marie Reynaud Twin Mk. II (4 ohm, 90dB)
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Muse Model 2 DAC (basic with no Bessel or HDCD). Homebrew Taddeo Passive Digital Antidote II copy with better parts btwn DAC & amp.
Integra DPS 5.3 DVD player as transport
Other Source(s): Sansui T77 "Synthesizer Tuner". Hey, it cost me $15CDN, so I'm not complaining. It does better than the Technics receiver I used to own...
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Homebrew speaker cables, interconnects, power cords - all large gauge multi-strand copper with rubber insulation

AudioQuest Slate lying around, not in use.

Audioquest Diamondbacks on rare occaisions

Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Homebrew power block with Pass & Seymour outlets, star-grounding

Blue Circle BC86 Mk. II parallel filter

Tweaks: All homebrew:

Isolation pads made of RubberMaid Goodgrips and cork. These are underneath Maple cutting boards on all components. Wooden roller bearings under DVDP.

Maple cutting board on top of DVDP - makes the sound "woodier" ;) Maple blocks atop DAC - these may not do anything, but I like the look

Room Size (LxWxH): 10.5ft x 9.5ft x 8ft
Room Comments/Treatments: Tiny room. Nearfield listening only, about 6-7ft from speakers. Carpeted, heavy drapes, open bookshelves full of... ...books!
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Classical for the most part, with occasional forays into jazz and rock/pop.
System Goals/Comments: Goal: To try and make music as alive as possible in a small room and a small budget.
System Strengths: Remarkable soundstage width, surprising given the small room. Good detail, good dynamics, good pacing.
System Weaknesses: Soundstage depth could be better; some brightness; nasty midrange glare on some recordings, especially female vocals - unless that's my ears...
Video/HT System: Integrated
TV/Projector: 14" Samsung (I'm no videophile...)
Sources (DVD/VCR): Previously mentioned Integra DVD player, Panasonic PVK 4163 HiFi VCR died - not replaced
Comments on HT System: Not a priority for me, obviously.
