Graeme's Red Wine System System
Last Update: March 16, 2004 at 06:52:38 IP Address: 211.29.136.13
Amplifier: Rotel 990
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): ME 25, Superphon Revelation Basic (for headphones)
Speakers: Sonus Faber Concerto on SF adjustable Ironwood stands.Whatmough Typhoon subwoofer.KEF Concerto (circa 1975), AR LS38s
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Sony XB940 SACD, Rotel 965 LED.
Turntable/Phono Stage: Linn LP12 (pre Basik) with Cetech subchassis, Origin Live 250, Denon 103R, Dynavector P-75 on Target wall shelf.
Other Source(s): NAD 4020, Sony Walkman Pro.
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: No name heavy gauge multistrand speaker cable (biwired.Nordost Black Knight and RS Gold I/Cs
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Dedicated 30Amp spur(240v). All electronics in large wooden cabinet.( compromise with SO)CARA Rel 2.1 Plus Room Acoustics Program.
Tweaks: Squash balls under everything except speakers.
Room Size (LxWxH): 14.5 x 11.5 x 9.5
Room Comments/Treatments: At the speaker end, there is a "hollow" resonance noticeable with clapped hands which does not seem to have too deleterious an effect on music. There is also a strong room mode at around 40Hz, which has been ameliorated by moving from floorstanders to the concertos. Since using the CARA acoustics program, neither of the above problems are evident! Now have a Behringer Ultracurve 8024 which gets rid of the gross room anomalies.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Very wide range. I used to say "all types except country", but I even like plenty of country these days, so I'll have to scratch that one and substitute " everything except easy listening and elevator music"
System Goals/Comments: To be drawn into the music rather than be conscious of the system.
System Strengths: Beautiful vocals. Rhythmic, involving, and - especially with the sub - a high, wide and deep soundstage. I find that I'm spending a lot of time in there. Since applying the results of the CARA analysis the sound has improved enormously; it has made more difference than any component change. I now have a very even and "natural" bass response with increased soundstage depth.
System Weaknesses: Amplification could be more liquid through the mids, and a more resolving and airy source would be nice - (I have it now with the SACD!)
Video/HT System: None
