LesF's Home Sweet Home System
Last Update: September 14, 2006 at 16:37:06 IP Address: 148.167.254.1
Amplifier: Music Reference RM9 (100w tube), Forte Model 4 (50w SS Class A), Moscode 300 (150w tube/SS hybrid). I rotate these thru my system as the mood strikes. The RM9 is my favorite, though each has its charms and strengths
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Conrad Johnson PV1 (upgraded to PV2a status and recently rebuild PS), Forte Model 44, Bottlehead Foreplay II, Theta Tube pre. Ditto on the rotation. The CJ is my fave.
Speakers: Vandersteen 2Ci, B&W DM110 monitors, Rat Shack Minimus 7s, Dayton Titanic 10 mkII sub. The Vandies are my fronts and the B&Ws or Minimus 7s serve as ambient rears in a Hafler set up - currently using a Chase HTS1 surround unit. The Vandies run full range and the sub is crossed over at 40hz with the level at about 9 o'clock - a little goes a long way.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Denon DCD-1250. Built like a tank. Sounds OK.
Turntable/Phono Stage: Table 1) SOTA Sapphire/FT3 arm/AT-440ML

Table 2) Kenwood KD500/SME 3009 S2 improved/Shure M97ex, AT-SLA20a, BluePoint (original p-mount model), or Grace F9e.

Other Source(s): Sansui AT-666 AM/FM Tuner
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Audioquest F14 spkr cable: Straightwire, Tara Labs, Monster, Homegrown silver, lots of others.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Power Wedge on line level gear only. Two Billybag racks and one BB amp stand.
Tweaks: Two dedicated 20 amp AC lines. Sonex Juniors in DIY frames and burlap covers. Assorted spikes and sorbothane pucks where needed. VPI 17 RCM.
Room Size (LxWxH): 22 x 14-17 x 10-16
Room Comments/Treatments: Berber wall to wall carpet on floor, Vaulted ceiling, room width varies 14 - 17 ft. Speaks aligned along long (22') wall. Sonex panels (4) arranged to absorb first reflections behind main speaks, furniture blocks 1st reflections on side walls, opening in wall behind listening chair swallows rear wall 1st reflections. Lots of furniture in this room disperses sound nicely. Still, the room is a bit more lively than I would like. Hope to add some GIK Acoustic panels in the near future.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Almost anything, but mostly rock/pop/jazz/blues
System Goals/Comments: To make me happy. My preference is for Vinyl (big surprise) but CD done very well is acceptable. Waiting for some sort of hi-rez flash-memory medium to arise before I invest much in new digital technology. Will sit out the SACD/DVD-A/BlueRay format wars.
System Strengths: Lots of warmth, solid imaging, and just enough bass (it's real easy to over do it with a sub - I'm finding less is more here). Doesn't hurt my ears.
System Weaknesses: Less detail and transparency than other systems I've heard, though I hate that itchy-cold sound many High-End systems exhibit.
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Computers, Hiking, Backpacking, Fourwheeling, Movies
