IP Address: 156.99.40.14 Last Update: April 14, 2011 at 14:11:18
Amplifier: Music Hall A25.2
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): none (integrated)
Speakers: Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo 3, Athena AS-P300 "subwoofer"
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Denon DVD-2900
Turntable/Phono Stage: Pro-Ject Debut III/Bellari VP-129
Other Source(s): a Kenwood cassette deck and numerous leftover disc players I should get rid of (Pioneer 563a, Onkyo dx-c390 CD changer, a broken Music Hall CD25.2, etc.)
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: no-frills, mostly Acoustic Research from Best Buy
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Jazz, rock, funk/soul
System Goals/Comments: Old gear I meant to sell has been piling up and I've decided to turn it into an entry-level system that's better suited for hanging out with friends and beer by adding a new turntable. I bought the speakers used many years ago and they have never made me very happy so I'm eventually going to want to get rid of them, they don't have much dynamic punch and the treble is a bit too laid-back for my taste. I love the CD25.2 but it barely reads discs any more so the Denon has become the main disc player -- and while it plays SACD and theoretically has a strong analog output stage, CD performance seems lackluster (I've heard this about the 2900 and am now inclined to believe it). So at this point there's a lot of compromise, but it isn't meant to have a lot of work or money put into it.
System Strengths: Cheap and located conveniently near the beer fridge.
System Weaknesses: Mediocre CD performance (see above), very poor bass response (the AE towers don't seem to output much and the Athena sub is really meant for low end home theater satellites). The TT & phono stage are arriving today (4-14-11) so we'll see how that goes.
Video/HT System: None
