Amplifier: | Adcom GFA-585: 250 W/ch 8 Ohms, 400 W/ch 4 Ohms, 27 dB gain, 0.7 Hz-80kHz (-3dB), 10Hz-20kHz (+0/-0.5dB), THD+N @ 400W/4Ohms: 0.003% @ 20Hz-1kHz, 0.007% @ 10kHz, 0.015% @ 20kHz, IMD (CCIF) @ 400W/4Ohms: <=0.003%. Also have two GFA-545 II, one GFA-535 II, a Hafler DH-220, and multiple Luxman R-10XX models and Harman Kardon HK-560 and some other similar late 1970s receivers. |
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): | Adcom GTP-500 II w/remote control. Also have "several" others. |
Speakers: | Magnepan MG-12/QR ( MG12 ), Vandersteen 2Ce , Thiel CS1.2 , sometimes all selectable with Adcom GFS-3 speaker selector switch. |
Sources: | |
CD Player/DAC: | Sony BDP-S350 |
Turntable/Phono Stage: | POS |
Other Source(s): | Computer, IPOD |
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: | 14 AWG zip cord for MG-12/QR 14 AWG zip cord, bi-wired, for Vandersteen 2Ce |
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): | Superlux ECM999 Measurement Microphone, A.R.T. TubeMPStudio Mic Preamp, ARTA Software |
Tweaks: | Replaced the electrolytic capacitor in the bass section of the crossover of ONE MG-12, only, with a polypropylene cap. Currently attempting to measure differences between modded and un-modded MG-12 speakers. But I can definitely HEAR the difference. Keeping the tweeter fuses in the MG-12s! Blew them both at once when the preamp's motorized volume knob got "stuck" in clockwise mode! |
Room Size (LxWxH): | 12 x 20 x 8 |
Room Comments/Treatments: | Currently listening position is on couch at center of long wall, with speakers about 1/3 of the way across the room from both the front wall and the side walls, toed-in to cross just behind listening position. Have floor-to-ceiling curtain (about 4 feet wide) behind each speaker. usually keep the Vandersteens against the inboard sides of the MG-12s, which greatly-enhances bass from MG-12s. (Vandersteens are not usually connected to anything. They just block reflections). |
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): | Classical, Classic Rock, Jazz, just about anything except Rap and old-style twangy country/western |
System Goals/Comments: | Goal: MG-3.X or IIIa, or, Tympanis Another goal: to try bi-amping or tri-amping with an active small-signal crossover before the power amps. |
System Strengths: | Sound is exquisite. Frequency response measures very flat at the listening position. Even the bass from MG-12 speakers is astoundingly great. |
System Weaknesses: | It would be nice if the MG-12/QR speakers could play a little more loudly before they start to self-distort. |
Video/HT System: None | |
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: | Electrical engineer. Enjoy the Electronic Warfare field. Also enjoy automatic weapon-delivery systems, statistical pattern recognition, designing audio amps, refurbing older test equipment and antique tube gear, my 10-inch Newtonian reflector telescope, and cherish "wine, women, and song". |
