Mr_Foxz's THE SIMPLE BASTARD SON System
Last Update: December 26, 2000 at 17:08:27 IP Address: 208.161.16.26
Amplifier: ADCOM 5200, 50w...accurate and powerful, the philosophy is high current and pure "A"
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Stock Foreplay with handmade mahogany base. This will soon be replaced with a custom 4play with heavy mods.
Speakers: Current: Infinity SM-115 3-way loudspeakers with 10" bass, 5" midrange and 1"poly tweeter
by January: straight 8's, not biamped, with custom faux marble finish and hand made aluminum spikes (50,65,65 on 1.5 inch stock)
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Sony ES CDP-XA1ES...ES technology without the lousy ES price hike...great cost/sound ratio
Turntable/Phono Stage: Fisher Price all-in-one...with original needle! (no joke...have not used since discovering the needle made a better furrow then a stile)
Other Source(s): Link to PC.. have 200 hours+ of mp3's for casual playback (ouch)
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Monster 6ga 15" speaker cables with gold ends . Interconnects are 3 foot monster jobs....yuck.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): none...yet!
Room Size (LxWxH): 12 x 8 x 98"
Room Comments/Treatments: dorm rooms....ouch! I have installed drapes, wall hangings and acousta-board to help damp the concrete block walls...
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Jazz from foxtrots to ornette, Blues of all varieties, Classical (Bach, Vivaldi, Zappa) Techno (happy hardcore, Goa, Psy-trance, dark drum n' bass, jungle, old skool, funky breakbeats)(actually, a minor genre for me) World music, celtic, opera, rock n' roll
System Goals/Comments: My goal for this system is simplicity; I went from a processor heavy mentality back in High School 4 years ago to a 3 component down to basics system. This process has continued with the move to a two-way speaker...lowthers are not an option in the dorm life, unfortunately. I am looking for warmth, dynamics, a sense of "air" and sounstage. speaker response speed is a must; bass is nice, but must be responsive and timely. I hope the my new straight 8's will improve the speed, yet not compromise bass too much. I hope to be all tube in 3 years.
System Strengths: -under 1,500$ U.S. (with bargain buys)
-Simple
-dorm safe (refer to strength #1)
-fast and responsive, yet listenable
-great for causual and semi-critical CD playback
-simplicity allows rapid A/B's
-better then most college systems
System Weaknesses: -poorly built stock Foreplay (sound is getting crispy)
-infinity's are a tad slow
-SS amp is a little cool
-lack of usable turntable
-no homebuilt FM tuner (yet)
Video/HT System: None
