Jeff's Downstairs System
IP Address: 108.171.131.172 | Last Update: October 20, 2016 at 19:29:43 |
Amplifier: | Cinepro 600X, 300w per 8 ohm load down to a 2 ohm load minimum (1200w max/ch). Carver AV-64 (2 units), 60w/8 ohm or 100w/4 ohm per channel (4ch ea) |
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): | Carver CT-17 (tuner/preamp/prologic decoder) Furman X-524 (stereo 4 way crossover, running as a 3-way for now) |
Speakers: | Oaktron double magnet 15" in 7 ft^3 bass reflex with EV DH1506 on SM120 midhorn and Selenium ST-304 bullet tweeter pair |
Sources: | |
CD Player/DAC: | My Yamaha CDX-520 quit so I'm using the Toshiba or the Pioneer for CD playback |
Turntable/Phono Stage: | Thorens TD165 with ADC XLM Improved MarkII & Stanton 680EE (2 headshells) |
Other Source(s): | Fisher Hi-Fi VHS VCR, I've started burning my own CD's on my PC. Also a couple of Technics cassette decks (RS-955 with dbx & RS-TR515 with Dolby B,C&HX). |
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: | 14 gauge on the woofers and 18 gauge zip cord for the mids and tweets |
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): | Topaz 91005-11 5KVA ultra-isolator wired to provide balanced power (really lowered the noise floor and reduced video noise too), old 5' rack from my employer's old minicomputer hard disk drive. A Sima SVS-4 switcher automatically selects the active video source since the CT-17 can only accomodate 1 video source and 1 VCR. |
Tweaks: | I'm not into non-measurable expensive wastes of money. Multi way electronic crossovers increase headroom, lower distortion and control phase shifts also. |
Room Size (LxWxH): | not x big x enough |
Room Comments/Treatments: | I hope that I can address this once I finish upgrading the speakers. |
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): | Rock, Punk, Jazz(acid, scat...), Bluegrass, Celtic, Cajun, to name a few out of dozens of genre's. Just about anything with good musical values (not much commercially successful junk). |
System Goals/Comments: | I'll be building some bass and midbass horns and upgrading the midrange horns and drivers to a choice between EV DH1A's and JBL 2482's on EV HP9040 or JBL 2350 horns. For woofers I've got 8 Gauss 5842's for the subhorns and a pair of EV EVM10M for the midbass horns. |
System Strengths: | High efficiency, high power, low noise floor (when I disconnect the cable connection that really adds a lot of noise to my system, I'm going to have to add a back to back balun isolation system eventually) |
System Weaknesses: | Probably not the best for delicate chamber music, but I do like the Brodski Quartet on my system. |
Video/HT System: Integrated
TV/Projector: | RCA 27" F27671SE |
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: | see the system info |
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): | center is biamped (Crest 1001A amp with Loft crossover) with 6.5" woofer and funky Zomax titanium 1" driver on 90x40 horn. surround speakers have dual 5-1/4" woofers with 1" Peerless soft dome tweeter in 1/4 cu ft sealed enclosures. Sub, SUB? I don't need no stinking sub! A friend gave me a DBX sub that I couldn't crank enough gain into an old Dynaco ST120 to keep up with my system, so after I replaced the original burnt out passive crossover I gave it to another friend who really likes it. |
Sources (DVD/VCR): | Toshiba SD-3107 DVD, Pioneer CLD-3090 Laserdisc, Fisher FVH-7600 VCR |
Comments on HT System: | You can see photos of my rack on the gallery page of my website. |

Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: | Bass and midbass horn enclosure design and construction (well, I do simpler speaker projects also): occupation - industrial/commercial electrical sales, mostly OEM's but also panelboards up to 3000 amps and controls too. |
