G Phillips's Audio System
Last Update: May 14, 2001 at 18:34:39 IP Address: 209.49.118.20
Amplifier: Cary 805C monos(main)50w SET WE300B,
Jeff Rowland Concentra IA 100w8/150w4,
Kora Titan monos 125w push pull
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Currently using preamp portion of Rowland Concentra. I am considering addition of a tube linestage preamp.
Speakers: Main: Merlin VSM SE w/BAM upgraded by Blue Circle (presently my speaker of choice)
also: SoundLab Aurora full range stats
also: Gallo Nucleus Reference
also: Magnapan 1.6QR
also: Meridian DAS5000
(I intend to sell all but the Medrlin)
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Meridian 508(original 18 bit I think)
Pioneer DVD-09
Turntable/Phono Stage: n/a
Other Source(s): Mac MR7082 AM/FM tuner
Sony DSS
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Cardas Hexlink w/spade
Silver Audio Appasonata & Silver Bullet 4.0 RCA
Kimber Select copper RCA long run to amps
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): none at this time. Giving power issues consideration. Looking for a rack.
Tweaks: TacT RCS 2.0 Room Correction Preamplifier w/AD&DA (not used regularly - I haven't decided whether to keep long term and if so just where to best place in the chain)
Room Size (LxWxH): 23 x 14 x 9
Room Comments/Treatments: Room is combo living w/dinning at one end which widens to about 17 ft. I don't use the dinning room which becomes the performance "stage". Speakers are placed across the short dimension essentially separating the living and dinning areas. They are pulled out 8-9ft. from the back dinning wall about where the room widens and are 8-9ft. apart leaving 2+ft. to the side walls. They are angled in slightly.
Being able to pull speakers out has helped the depth quite a bit.
Room has short pile wall to wall carpet.
Rack is to the side but mono blocks are next to the speakers.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Acoustic (folk, vocal, clasical)
some new age.....looking into others (blues etc.) to expand my horizons
System Goals/Comments: Palpable presence, great soundstage and body, operational ease and reliability, nice esthetics
System Strengths: Finally having time to set up and listen so too early to tell.
System Weaknesses: see above
Video/HT System: Separate
TV/Projector: Panasonic 27" XF series (top of the line)
small but looks great and I sit fairly close
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: Meridian 565 SS processor - serves also as limitted preamp
Merdian 551 Int Amp
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): center: none
sub: VonSchweikert Tower of Power
I have several speakers I have been experimenting with.....currently
front: Gallo Reference (until I sell them)
sur: Meridian DSP5000 (until I sell them)
Sources (DVD/VCR): Pioneer DVD-09
Mitsubishi SVHS VCR
Sony DSS w/SPDIF out
Comments on HT System: Just beginning HT. I picked up the 565 and am currently using "extra" components from my audio system(s) to piece together a HT system until I sell the extras and replace with a longer term solution. Should I end up with one system for both purposes, then I believe I would like to build around the Proceed AVP, which doesn't preclude keeping the AVP upstream from a tube preamp and running music directly into the preamp using the AVP just for movies). If I go this route, I may choose to have another pair of excelect speakers do duty in the rear so I can turn around and use them for 2 channel when I want. In this case, I would like to try either the AG Duos or the VonSchweikert VR5s. It's a great excuse for two pair of great speakers. If, however, I keep separate systems, then I may just go with a receiver for HT. Although I enjoy improved sound for movies, to a point, it is just not as critical to me as my 2 channel music.
The systems are separate for now because of the placement of the TV although they share the same room and actually some of the same source components. The TV is on the side as I view the audio system. I simply turn my listening chair 90 degrees and I have a ss system. I felt it helped the audio system to get the TV out from between the main audio speakers. It certainly helps with "picturing" the stage and performers.
