Gary Selken 's Main Music System System
IP Address: 70.113.88.192 Last Update: February 07, 2013 at 19:20:44
Amplifier: Audio Research "Reference 250" (vacuum tube monaural power amplifiers) - OR
Mark Levinson No.33 monaural power amplifiers (300/600/1200/2400 WPC into 8/4/2/1 Ohms
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Audio Research 'Anniversary Edition Reference' (linestage)
Speakers: Magnepan 20.7s

REL Studio III subwoofer (currently unused)

Stax Signature Headphones + TRM-1 tube amp

Stax ED-1 Diffuse Field headphone equalizer
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Audio Research Reference CD9 (all-tube, digital inputs and outputs)
Turntable/Phono Stage: Sumiko 'Sho' / SME V / SOTA Star Saphire

Jeff Rowland 'Consummate' phono stage
Other Source(s): Magnum Dynalab 'Etude' tuner
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Cardas 'Golden Reference' interconnects and speaker cable
Room Size (LxWxH): 25 x 15.7 x 8.5
Room Comments/Treatments: RPG diffusers flank 1 central 4X4 RPG abfusor behind speakers. 1 4x4 abfusor at 1st reflection spot on one side wall, other side is sliding glass doors (opened or covered by curtains for best sound.) ASC "Tube Traps" (16", 11", 9" rounds) in corners really help to define the bass
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): classical, jazz, folk, thought-provoking rock, and ANY recording that sounds real
System Goals/Comments: I enjoy the equipment as much as the music, so I enjoy continually trying new gear; but as I continue to refine my system for long-term listening satisfaction I find it becoming more stable. (I'm probably just getting old.)
System Strengths: Musically engaging, detailed, and dynamic, but with no distracting faults or listening fatigue. Transparent and enveloping soundstage. Sounds very much like full-range ESLs, but with much of the dynamic punch of good cone systems.
System Weaknesses: Relatively narrow sweet spot (left to right)
Video/HT System: Separate
TV/Projector: Mitsubishi 40505 (40' tube) TV
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): AR 570 'Powered Partner
Sources (DVD/VCR): Mitsubishi HS-U778 S-VHS VCR

Pioneer CLD-D702 Laserdisc
Other HT Gear: (In other room)
Comments on HT System: Tube beats rear projection IMO but reflections off this large curved screen are a real problem for daytime viewing. I use my other (A/V) room for a full-blown movie experience.
