Rob G.'s System
Last Update: November 01, 1999 at 21:21:16 IP Address: 152.163.207.77
Amplifier: Golden Tube Audio SE40, single ended pentode
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Melos SHA Gold (unbalanced), with remote volume and balance control.
Speakers: Fried Studio V -- 3-way with transmission line bass (8") & mid (6.5") & Hiquphon tweeter. 91dB efficient. -3db @ 28hz. First-Order 6db/octave crossover. M.A.R.S. "ambience recovery" implementation (interaural crosstalk cancellation via dual voice-coil bass & mids).
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: crappy little Aiwa portable to play the silver thingies.
Turntable/Phono Stage: Oracle Delphi MKII with full Brooks Berdan Mods. Emminent Technology II airbearing tonearm w/realtime VTA adjustment & silicon damping trough. WISA airpump & Airtech surgetank. Mod Squad custom power supply. Tiptoes. AQ sorbothane mat. Sumiko Blue Point Special cartridge. McCormack Micro Phono Drive phono section.
Other Source(s): Rotel 920AX tuner
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Kimber 4TC speaker cable.
Kimber PBJ interconnects.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Target Beta 6 stand. Never had any problems with hum, RFI, hashy power, so haven't tried any conditioners, etc.
Tweaks: Yep, re-adjust the turntable with every change in the phase of the moon...
Room Size (LxWxH): 24 x 17 x 8
Room Comments/Treatments: Actually living/dining room combo with very large opening. Carpeted, plaster. A bit over-damped.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): 80% classical, remainder totally eclectic.
System Goals/Comments: Space, the Final Frontier
System Strengths: M.A.R.S. speakers offer even more expansive soundstage than planars/stats. Far left/right images are outside the room. Extremely dynamic, potent TL bass, natural (vs. "hi fi") mids & highs. From mids-up imaging is point source, but not quite as good as the best mini-monitors (but those don't do "big space" like these things!)
System Weaknesses: Need more bass control & power than 40wpc tube amp can muster. Better cartridge soon.
Video/HT System: Separate
TV/Projector: Yep, got one (31").
Sources (DVD/VCR): Yep, got a VCR, too.
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: 22 years administrator for performing arts organizations, mostly marketing, mostly big orchestras.
