B Peter's Solid & SET System
Last Update: June 19, 2002 at 01:09:32 IP Address: 195.54.99.106
Amplifier: SET amplifier, 15 clean W, output tubes are KR Enterprise 52B.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Minimalistic, light weight solid state, remote controlled volume. 1 input only.
Speakers: Mosen by Mumma Audio with sand-filled birch-stands. 87 db/1 W efficiency, impedance is a rather straight&forward 8 ohm.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Linn Karik III (serial no. > 16000)
Turntable/Phono Stage: Thorens TD166MK2 with Musical Fidelity XPS phonostage (not in use)
Other Source(s): Yamaha radio (not in use)
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Solid core copper cables for speakers (the kind used for electrical appliances), pure silver interconnects - no PVC, unshielded.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Cheapest kind of Target rack from the 80's(as ugly as it gets and not very sturdy). All electronics on Sonic Design damping feet. Powercords for CD and amplifier are flat, solid silver cables - unshielded!
Tweaks: Blue-tack on some pieces in the preamp. Sonic design damping feet under all electronics.
Room Comments/Treatments: The room (3x5 meters) has concrete walls and unfortunately rather ugly, sharp, resonances.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Classic music, jazz, blues, pop, some soul, Hendrix, Costello, Creedence and other rock.
System Goals/Comments: My goal is to enjoy music. I do not have a clear picture of what this ultimately would mean in form of system strengths but learn as I go along. As an example I find that, sofar, fluidity and timing is more important than to hear all details. For the most part I don't know what to look for or what to expect when trying out a new component so my "strategy" takes unexpected directions when I find a component that gives a (often unexpected) new strength to the system. Most unexpected beneficial component was the powercords, they really improved fluidity.

I avoid shielded powercords and interconnects since I find that they make the music sound hard, almost distorted, and dead. I do use shielded cables for video/dvd (for the picture).

System Strengths: Fast and without colorations from the speakers. This means that anything I change upstream in the speakers is audible. The sound is now very fluid and has good timing. It is a pleasure to listen to. The CD-player sounds better than SACD's sounds with my dvd-player. Small scale classic, jazz, pop and blues sounds very enjoyable indeed.
System Weaknesses: Life-likeness somewhat muffled by the speakers unability to reach low.
Video/HT System: Integrated
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: Tivoli Audio, Henry Kloss Model one (nice!)
Sources (DVD/VCR): Sony dvp-ns700 with stereo (and multichannel) SACD-capability.
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Photography, traditional wet black&white darkroom-work.
