NewbieBaby's BlaK BloX Oddio System
Last Update: December 04, 2006 at 08:50:57 IP Address: 4.230.84.232
Amplifier: 'DynaGlow' ST 70 chassis, Triode Electronics driver circuit; 6B4G DHT output tubes (class A, zero NFB), SDS Labs power supply boards, Magnequest power transformer; output transformers are oringinal cloth lead type
Subwoofer amp is currently a bridged NAD 214.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Stevens and Billington TX-102 transformer volume control; built in a BlaK BloX (a Par-Metal chassis box); Bottlehead Seduction phono stage in same box; Pete Millet hybrid headphone amplifier in same box; Marchand bass crossover in same box.
Speakers: My variant of the Hammer Dynamics S-12 speaker; the speaker cabinet construction (but not dimensions) is significantly changed from the Wycoff design; made of hardwood ply with oblique bracing, Black Hole 5, and cotton ticking damping; other treatments.
Subwoofer is a single 18 in. Adire Tempest driver in a 150 litre sealed cabinet (XO is active Marchand XM-9 boards)
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: CDPro2M kit transport.
Ack! dAck! 2.0 DAC mounted into the CDPro2M chassis.
The Ack! dAck! is installed into the CDPro2M chassis, making it effectively a CDP system.
Turntable/Phono Stage: Turntable is a Teres DIY; acrylic plinth; microprocessor controlled DC motor drive; Rega RB250 with Origin Live Structural mod and Incognito internal wire mod; cartridge is Ortofon Kontrapunct Alpha
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: IC's are DIY fine wire silver in cotton sheath with Eichmann bullet plug RCA's.
Speaker cable has become a system of 20 ga. OCC wire in cotton sheath in teflon tap. 4 runs of wire for each + or - lead to give about 13 ga per lead. All ternimation contacts are bare copper. There are spade terminatins on both ends and Cardas "Patented Binding Posts" fitted to both amp and speakers. These permitted a significant step up in projected sound quality. As is standard for BlaK BloX Oddio, the outer sheath is black.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): 1.5 kV EquiTech Q transformer wired in Blak BloX with outlets and switching controls. Each component has separate outlet, and the CDP supply has additional filtering.
Tweaks: Being essentially all DIY, the whole system is a tweek.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): No fixed preferences, will listen to almost anything at least once
System Goals/Comments: Dynamic, harmonic, and scale realism.
System Strengths: With judicious changes, the system continues to improve.
System Weaknesses: The apartment room. Scale of the sound is not as large as I would like.
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: wandering around looking at things
