maineiac's The one and only System
Last Update: December 08, 2001 at 06:58:27 IP Address: 24.198.43.36
Amplifier: McCormack DNA1
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): McCormack TLC-1
Speakers: PSB Stratus Golds (the original version)
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Onkyo 373; Marantz 500; MSB Link DAC III with upsampling
Turntable/Phono Stage: 20 yr old RCA(I think)
Other Source(s): Yamaha t-85 tuner. Great stereo separation

RCA digital tape deck, vintage 84

Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: speaker cables: DIY TNT stars. DAC and tuner to pre:TMC Whites. Pre to Amp: TMC Gold
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): FlexY six shelf, mdf shelves are double thickness. Dedicated AC lines, hospital outlets.
Tweaks: Speakers decoupled from suspended wood floor using mdf platforms on ballbearing casters. This has tightened up the base. Also can move speakers to optimal position when esthetics of room placement is not in question. (Most of the time) Weight on top of CDPs and DAC.
Room Size (LxWxH): 20 x 12 x 7.75
Room Comments/Treatments: I/m in process of building floor to ceiling cabinets across one end of living room so that FlexY will be inside ventilated cabinet and not interacting with speakers so much. The PSBs can roll back into the cabinets,to be seen and heard, but their best placement will be out from their cabinet space about two feet.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Jazz, both vocal and instrumental, especially bone. Classical, choral, American folk, international.
System Goals/Comments: I wanted a system which would present enough realism that I could get lost in the music. This happens, in spite of so-so speaker cables, and no room treatment as of yet. A second goal was to have a complete system within my limited budget. Buying used speakers, amp and pre made this possible.
System Strengths: There are no glaring faults, which is a real strength to me. There seems to be little coloration of source material. Listening to in-studio performances of NPR St Paul Sunday sometimes takes my breath away because the music is so real and emotional. Midrange and bass are great. Mingus' bass solos sound as if he is on a stage about 20 feet in front of me.
System Weaknesses: When attempting to play the inefficient Golds at very low volumes, the music flattens out. My nondescript turntable is rarely used now that I know I might damage my records with it. Looking for a good used phono setup is my next project.
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Play lead bone in a swing band, play in a jazz septet. Like woodworking and am learning speaker building, thanks to the Single Driver Forum.
