St. Ives's St. Ives Second Hand System ( spend less - get more ) System
Last Update: December 10, 2001 at 17:31:16 IP Address: 24.69.255.204
Amplifier: Audiolab 8000P - A decent but now defunct British power amp.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Audiolab 8000C - Same goes for this unit as well. Lots of flexiblity, even has phono input.Alas I am not partial to vinyl.
Speakers: Soundwave Soliloquys. Another excellent speaker that is no longer with us. A 2 way four driver design. Five sided cabinet sealed encloser. They sound very natural, smooth wide dispersion very good bass( 8" mid/bass drivers ).
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Monarchy Audio DT-40A LD player used as a transport. DPA PDM2 dac. This unit uses two seperate units - one for the power supply and one for the digital converter.A very "analogue" sounding DAC.
Turntable/Phono Stage: N/A
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Category 5 network cable biwired ( from the pages of TNT ).Straightwire Enore II between pre/power amp.Belden cable btween Sonic frontiers Jitterbug and DPA PDM2. Optex digital cable between transport and Sonic Frontiers.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Sonic Frontiers Ulra Jitterbug.System rack home made. ( courtesy TNT )
Tweaks: Sand filled zip lock bags under and on top of the Monarchy transport & the DPA PDM2.Further isolated w/ a partially deflated inner tube. Vibrapods under preamp.
Room Size (LxWxH): 23 x 12 x 8
Room Comments/Treatments: My TV/HT equipment is stuck between the main speakers. My quick fix is a large bathroom towel to cover the TV.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Smooth jazz,New Age ( patrick O'Hearn ),blues ( Ronnie Earl etc. )some classical.( Ravel,Debussey,Vaughn Williams etc. ) and general instrumental, and some rock such as Elvis,Sting,Carpenters it just depends.
System Goals/Comments: I am pretty well finished, although I might biamp if I come across a reaonably priced 8000P.
System Strengths: A very involving system. Alot of detail smooth sounding, solid well defined bass and very open. The better the recording the more I get out of it. It never tires me.
System Weaknesses: The bass is somewhat lacking, could go a bit lower.
Video/HT System: Separate
TV/Projector: Mitsubishi 26" TV
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: Briton 5 ch. power amplfier. Denon AVD 2000 pre/processor. Dolby digital only.
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): Center ch.> Paradigm CC350. Surrounds > Paradigm Atoms. Sub. > Paradigm PDR10.
Sources (DVD/VCR): Toshiba SD1600 DVD player, Sony LD player (MD1 ?).
Comments on HT System: Sounds more than adequate in my somewhat small main room. I live in a condo so i need to keep excess noise to a reasonable level.Besides, I like watching older movies.
