Navin's WIP (work in progress) System
Last Update: January 03, 2000 at 22:21:13 IP Address: 203.197.57.13
Amplifier: HF amp: Home made amp using a variation of B&K ST140 circuit pumped up to deliver 500W into 4 ohms.

SUB amp: Carver M1.0t

Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Home made amp using with ALPS pots, poly caps and MIL spec opamps. 2 way passive 6db XO at 60Hz built in to preamp. Hence preamp feeds power amps directly via HF and LF outputs.
Speakers: Home Brew:
SUB: 2 Audio Concepts DV12 in 150 liter sealed box (per channel) about 90db/1W. Each driver has one voice coil shorted as this reduces Q by about 10%.

Satellite: 2 Scan Speak 18W8546 woofers and 1 2905-9900 tweeter in MTM about 91db/1W. 2 way crossover about 2000Hz.

Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Meracus Tanto
Other Source(s): Pioneer CT93
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Tanto to Preamp: Straightwaire Solo

Preamp to power amps: AFA (local house brand from Singapore)

Tape loop, and processor loops: Home made Belden using 83322 and 89259 respectively.

Speaker wire: Apature (unfortunately I ran this wire through floor and wall and now can't change it). If I could I'd change to Kimber 8TC/4TC.

Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Home made 3KVA power conditioner for power amps and 1KVA conditioner for all other electronics.
Tweaks: For making tapes for car:
ADC 525X equalliser,
DBX 1BXds dynamic range expander/compressor,
and Carver C9 Sonic Hologram Generator.
Room Size (LxWxH): 18 x 16 x 9
Room Comments/Treatments: Nothing special. System is in Bedroom.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Rock from 60s, 70s and 80s.
Jazz and Classical.
System Goals/Comments: Detail without making it tiring to listen to. Tight bass without the boom but at the same time no SPL limitation.
System Strengths: Midrnage and HF. Scan Speak makes great drivers.
System Weaknesses: Bass. Bass below 100Hz if difficult to control. To add to this every recording engineer mixes differently and I am going crazy trying to compensate.
Video/HT System: Separate
TV/Projector: Toshiba 34" (ask my wife)
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: Yamaha RX592 (I think) 100W X 5
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): 5 x JBL Pro III
2 sub each using 2 x Vifa M22WR-09 in isobraic sealed box for compactness corner loaded to extend bass to the 40s.
Sources (DVD/VCR): Pioneer CLD909
Panasoic VCR "625" something
Comments on HT System: Bass is not impressive but better than most 2 way speakers. Sometimes I miss the JBL 2245 12 cu. ft. bass bins (XO at 63Hz and powered by a fan cooled Adcom GFA 555) that I had before marriage but for most TV listening the 8" Vifa woofers are ok.

The Pro III (and I suspect the Control 1) are very good value for money. Are they still available for USD 200/pr? They are small, wall mountable, and have decent dynamic range (above 70Hz).

Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Occupation: manage computer software company.

Hobbies: tennis, skiing, sailing.
