NewYorkJosh's Decade-old Blue Chip Time Capsule System
Last Update: April 17, 2002 at 17:00:54 IP Address: 208.249.103.93
Amplifier: ARC Classic 60, retubed with Sovtech KT-91s, so now it's a "Classic-70".
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): ARC SP-14
Speakers: Pro-Ac Response 2
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Philips CD-80 into a PS Audio Ultralink via an Audio Alchemy DTI Pro
Turntable/Phono Stage: Roksan Xerxes,ET2 tonearm with Wisa pump & surge tank. Monster Sigma Genesis 2000 cartridge.
Other Source(s): Harmon Kardon 592 tape deck. Cheap Sony 200 CD changer feeds into DIP & DAC listed above.
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Speakers - Late 80s vintage boxless MIT MH-750 Shotguns, bi-wired. Currently evaluating Oval-12s and Tara RSC Prime 1000 bi-wires.
Interconnects: MIT MI-330s across the board. Van Den Hul "The First" as digital cables. Now, with speaker cables changes am trying Tara RSC Prime for Pre-amp to Amp runs.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Original Power Wedge
Tweaks: Cones, sorbothane pucks (especially the cheap 1/2 globes that Edmund Scientifics used to sell) TDK RF blockers. VPI magic brick on the amp's transformer. Bags of lead shot on solid state components and am constructing sandbag "saddlebags" to load the speakers.
Room Size (LxWxH): 27 x 16 x 16
Room Comments/Treatments: Carpets, drapes, Michael Green room tunes, bookcases. (Bookcases, fully loaded are the biggest modification along with area carpets).
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Small jazz ensembles of the 50s-80s. Rock (especially folk rock and 60s-70s). Blues. String quartets and chamber orchestra stuff.
System Goals/Comments: Musical satisfaction. I achieved it in the early 90's and didn't look back. That's why my system is a 1992 time capsule. I finally got there and have just been enjoying the music ever since. The new cable experiments are because I've moved and must get longer runs now.
System Strengths: Magic midrange: U-R-There vocals. Good spacial imaging and pacing. Highs are beautiful. Low end is tuneful and satisfying. Doesn't do much of anything wrong and does a whole lot really really right.
System Weaknesses: Low end slam. When I listen at the salon's big room I'm aware that the bottom octaves aren't there with my setup (but I don't miss them when I'm alone at home). Bass issue is exacerbated after my recent move to big room. Is a used Muse Model 18 sub in my future?
Video/HT System: Integrated
TV/Projector: MGA 27" - low end consumer
Sources (DVD/VCR): Sony 300 DVD, bottom of the line but it plays movies. I've got 3 old stereo VCRs.
Comments on HT System: Strictly 2 channel.
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: I'm a Network Administrator at a major cultural institution. I'm a tweaker at work as well as at home.
