Ed Z's Pretty good for limited budget System
Last Update: October 07, 2002 at 11:43:10 IP Address: 170.252.3.3
Amplifier: Ayre V-3 with updates, 100W/ch. It's all about music.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Morrison ELAD based on AD797 OpAmp. Very quiet, extremely detailed, can bit a bit dry.
Speakers: Thiel CS 2.2
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Arcam Alpha 7SE not great, but not bad. A very friendly sounding piece.
Other Source(s): Onkyo T9090II Tuner. A classic IMHO. Uses negative feedback to reduce distortion in stereo signal.
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Speaker cable: ZCable Passion v3 biwire which replaced Ensemble Megaflux FSF. Very detailed and transparent, dynamic and musical. Brings out the best sound with all equipment.

Interconnects: ZCable Live v5 beta (wow) which replaced Ensemble Masterflux (RCA). Fantastic bass and dynamics, very smooth and detailed, excellent soundstage.

Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Acme Audio labs silver plated, cryo treated outlets (big difference), ZCable Gold Lightning on CD and preamp and ZCable Thunder on amp (replaced Ensemble).
Tweaks: Final Lab Daruma III under CD Player. Black Diamond Racing Cones under preamp, and amp. Auric Illuminator on CD's. EAR damping material on caps and inside chassis from Michal Percy. Removed steel bolt from toroidal transformers.
Room Size (LxWxH): 15 x 10 x 7
Room Comments/Treatments: Unfinished basement, 'nuf said
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): 80's rock, Jazz, Classical, Blues, vocals
System Goals/Comments: Detail, warm timbre, punch, good soundstage.
System Strengths: Before: Nice soundstage, good dynamics, great for Jazz, nice detail at medium volume levels.

Now (with latest Live cables): Excellent soundstage, dynamic, great for vocals, focused, detailed, coherent, non-fatiguing. Sharp bass response. Almost no digital harshness!

System Weaknesses: Before: Some harsh sibilance, bass response is limited, upper midrange is a bit thin. Doesn't sound big like a Krell or Levinson.

Now (with lates Live cables): Thiel speakers are a bit dry sounding, and a little too forward in the midrange, CD player lacks some subtle dynamics and soundstaging.

Video/HT System: None
