unplugged's Audio On A Budget - Always Buy Used Equipment System
Last Update: May 11, 2003 at 15:46:36 IP Address: 24.69.255.205
Amplifier: Odyessy Design Labs (ODL) Model HT2 2 channel power amplifier.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Audiolab 8000C. Great unit for the money, very versatile. Nice to have phono input although I only listen to cd.
Speakers: Soundwave Soliloquys. Wonderful speaker that is no longer produced.2 way four driver design with a rather unique 5 sided sealed cabinet. Smooth sounding, great sound stage, very good, well controlled bass. Bi wired.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Monarchy Audio DT40A laser disc player. Weighs approx. 40 lbs. Very good as a transport. DPA PDM2 dac. Seperate power supply and digital converter. ( two piece )
Turntable/Phono Stage: N/A
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Chris VenHaus Cat 5 speaker cables. Bi wire 27/9 pairs version-great sounding! Interconnects: Straightwire Encore II between pre/power amp.Belden cable w/ Canare RCA connectors between transport and Sonic Frontiers Ultra Jitterbug. MIT Digital Reference from Sonic Frontier to DPA dac.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Tycor model ITS1205 line conditioner for digital components. Sonic Frontiers Ultra Jitterbug. TNT 'Flexy Table' audio rack.
Tweaks: Sand filled zip lock bags under and on top of the Monarchy Audio transport & the DPA PDM2 dac. Further isolated w/ a partially deflated inner tube. Vibrapods under Audiolab pre amp.
Room Size (LxWxH): 23 x 12 x 8
Room Comments/Treatments: My TV/HT equipment is stuck between the main speakers. A simple quick fix is a large towel used to cover the TV.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Smooth jazz, 'New age',( basically instumental), Classical ( Ravel, Debussey, Vaugn Williams etc.) Some rock such as Elvis, Sting, it just depends. If it sounds good to me I'll listen to it.
System Goals/Comments: Posssibly add a SACD player on day and change some of the interconnects.
System Strengths: A very involving system. Alot of detail, smooth sounding, solid, well defined bass and very open. The better the recording the more I get out of it.
System Weaknesses: Not much really. Could be a bit smoother on the top end but that is mostly because of the limits of standard cd and/or lousy recordings.
Video/HT System: Separate
TV/Projector: Mitsubishi 26" direct view. Works well enough until I can swing for a 48" to 52" HD widescreen RPTV.
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: Briton 5 ch. power amp.( Designed by Carver & built for a local hi fi dealer ) 100 w per ch. Denon AVD 2000 pre/processor. Dolby pro logic & Dolby Digital. RF input for AC 3 equipped laserdisc players.
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): Center ch.> Paradigm CC350, Surrounds> Paradigm Atoms, Sub> Paradigm PDR 10.
Sources (DVD/VCR): Toshiba SD1600 dvd player. Sony MDP 333 laserdisc player. I would like to upgrade to a Pioneer HLD-X9 but will settle for a CLD-D704!
Comments on HT System: Sounds more than adequate in my somewhat small main room. I live in a townhouse so I need to keep the noise level reasonable. As much as I like present day sound tracks for the -WOW!! factor- they usually lack substance.(They don't make them like they use to).I have a preference for films from the '50's and '60's and I still buy laserdiscs as many titles may never released on dvd.
