Amplifier: | Odyssey Stratus Mono blocks 'Xtreme Edition'
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): | none - going directly off the DAC to the power amps, no attenuator, nothing.
Speakers: | Magnepan 3.5R on custom stands, fuses bypassed
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: | DAC - modded DDDAC1543 battery powered, reclocked, USB-I2S interface, non-oversampling 16-way paralleled DIY unit that beats the big boys and lets me drive the amps directly, no opamps, no tubes, just some auricaps between output legs of DAC and input of amps. The source is a computer in a remote room, feeding the DAC via an optical USB extender cable (also custom battery powered) |
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: | 11 inch DIY Cat-5 bi-wire (27+9 pairs each side with mono blocks right behind speaker), and 2' cat-5 cooper twisted together to connect crossover to maggies directly. DIY 60' cotton/air/silver interconnect with WBT NextGen plugs on DAC to crossover and Eichmann plugs to power amp run. Venhaus FLavor 4 all-cryo parts 6-foot power cords with Marinco plugs on both ends for the amps. Lots of retired power cords I used to have for transports and preamps.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): | IKEA Lack Table rack. JR power filter box for the AC, and am using custom A/C cords for amps (DIY VenHaus Flavor4 all Cryo style). 12 amp OneAC isolation transformer dedicated to computer screen and KVM extender receiver and battery chargers. Cryo Hubbell outlets with damping and some ERS paper shielding. Big 12 amp OneAC isolation transformer that will be moved downstairs to the music server, now that there is no more AC sources upstairs.
Tweaks: | Bypassed fuses and most of the connection plate metals in the back of the speakers, but left it more or less reversible to stock. Built custom stands for mid-panel support and solid platform. Still working on finalizing this one - may build a metal version for space reasons.
Room Size (LxWxH): | 22 x 13 x 11
Room Comments/Treatments: | vaulted ceiling, some carpet. Have some plants behind the speakers. Auralex/Fiberglass custom bass traps in the corners behind the speakers, Corning 703 DIY absorbers all over the room. Now I just need to add some diffusion in key areas and then it's time to configure the digital room correction.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): | Electronic (Klaus Schulze), Jazz (Metheny, Meola, Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau), Steve Tibbets, Roger Waters, and anything else done well.
System Goals/Comments: | Get the most out of those maggies without spending too much; find more bass while staying away from subs
System Strengths: | Big Maggies reveal every tweak, keep growing with the system.
System Weaknesses: | new CDs and media friends bring over need to be ripped before I can hear them. That's the price you have to pay for a no-compromise computer setup
Video/HT System:
Separate
TV/Projector: | Sony 32' wega in another room
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: | Some sony thing from ebay with blown out center channel. Cost me $40 and included a decent subwoofer
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): | 2 channel Mission bookshelfs, Sony cheap sub that came with the ebay receiver. It rumbles - that's all it needs to do.
Sources (DVD/VCR): | Toshiba 3950 DVD player, fully modded, finds use in this system. Philips SVHS deck
Comments on HT System: | it does the job - I don't care much for the effects in movies. Good movies don't need the effects.
