Jacob_7's Are We There Yet?? System
Last Update: January 30, 2005 at 20:16:01 IP Address: 207.69.139.149
Amplifier: PRIMARY AMPS: One pair of Altec Lansing 1570B with the latest up grades by Tom Tutay. These put out 150 watts of PP triode. I'm very happy with these babies!! The Tom Tutay version is compleltly different than the stock version. However, all the great Peerless transformers are there,of course. Tube rolling is a must for the 6SL7& 6SN7. My favorite are the Tung Sol 'Black Glass' 6SU7GTY/6SL7 and either old Sylvania Tall Glass tubes like a VT-231 or w/o those exspensive words. Or the short bottle Sylvania 6SN7'W' or 'WGT' military models.

Second pair:
Quicksilver Sylvania 8417 mono blocks. Modified with Hovland coupling caps, Jensen oil/paper cap for power by pass. Cardas solid silver 18ga for signal path. Wired for triode and will later put in a switch to allow both triode and ultra linear. Vintage preamp tubes 12ax7 eg. Telefunken, Amperex (50's) etc., driver spot mostly Philips E80CC/6085 best driver for these amps (IMHO)and Mullard GZ34. The lowered the first stage of power supply as to NOT zap the GZ's so bad and extend the life of these tubes. And, Sylvania 8417 for the power tubes. Much better than the GE.

Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Quicksilver Full function preamp. No mods just a good vintage tubes: Mullards and Telefunkens and a few other NOS gems.
Speakers: Coincident Super Eclipse II, 92 sensetivity and 14 ohms
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: One 50lb. Sony 707ESD, (mid 80's) beefy transformers. The jacks have been upgraded, Cardas. Has a mod from Jeff Rowland to the on board chip a
nd not bad for its day but still use the old Bel Canto DAC 1.1 with a jitter bug device. Illuminati interconect and coaxi ,can't remember
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Coincident CST-1 speaker cable, will go to Chimera Labs' LS 9-9 speaker cable ** finaly went to Chimera** Totaly smoke the Coincident cables at 1/8 the size!!! unbelievable this much bass from such little copper!! and have changed from Kimber Select cables to Red Rose One silver litz i/c from amp to preamp and Chimera Lab Advantage 1 i/c from BC DAC 1.1 to QS 'Full Function' preamp. Kimber Illimunati from Bel Canto 1.1 to preamp, Audioquest ?? to the Monarchary DIP from the Sony 707ESD CDP used as a transport . I plan on migrating all cables to Chimera Lab cables except for the RR Silver One. One nice interconnect. Chimera Labs cables are remarkable cables at a reasonable cost!!
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): A 100 lb lunk of iron as a isolation transformer. Actually it's a Topaz 'Super Isolater'. Has developed a 60 hrz hum so I don't always use it. Want a Furman but will have to wait on that one.
Tweaks: Tweeks, hmmm, just tube roll, oh-will be freezing some tubes to see what's the buzz is all about. Cryogenicly freezing from Pearl Audio.
Room Size (LxWxH): 12 x 14 x 10'
Room Comments/Treatments: Need to soon. Have hard wood floors with a area carpet. Still too lively for me.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Jazz,Fusion, Rock (depends) and music I call 'Landscape' which could be music from Brian Eno or to sound tracks from various movies.
System Goals/Comments: more detale but with a natural sence. Improve on the power sources even though the line is dedicated. Room treatment should be my next project instead of more components.
System Strengths: Organic, very open and transparent. Really detaled with out any fatigue but not there yet. May need to play the cable game a little longer. ** With new amps the depth and sound stage has grown 10 folds and much more low level rez.
System Weaknesses: Room needs to soften up a bit with some kind of treatment
Video/HT System: None
TV/Projector: Not much into to the home theatre scene
