Thrifty Audiophile's A System Without a Name System
Last Update: November 18, 2005 at 20:16:24 IP Address: 66.225.124.54
Amplifier: Phase Linear 400 - 200WRMS (min.) into 8 ohms, Bogen CHB-100 (two of these) - 100W (not certain if this is peak, or RMS; I suspect the former) into 8 ohms,

Sherwood S-7900 receiver

Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): None
Speakers: Home-made: bass-reflex cabinets with 15'

woofers, 19' x 8' compression horn midrange

and 12' x 4' piezo horn tweeters. Plenty of

clutter nearby reduces standing waves

rather nicely!

Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Sony CDP-C900
Turntable/Phono Stage: Thorens TD-160 with Shure V15-III cartridge

Dual 512 - no cartridge yet

Other Source(s): Tascam 34B 4-track reel to reel

Teac A-4300 reel to reel

Teac A-660 cassette deck

Kenwood KX-1030

Kenwood KX-77CW dual cassette deck

Sunn MX-4108 eight channel mixing board

Tascam M-208 eight channel mixing board

Heathkit microphone mixing board (rotten

specs, but I assembled it myself :-)

etc... Almost forgot: an EchoAudio Mia-MIDI

sound-card.

Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Copper wire of an electically suitable

gauge, spiral sheilding, etc.

Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): None at this time, other than voltage spike

protection in the power strips.

Tweaks: None yet.
Room Size (LxWxH): 30 x 20 x 7
Room Comments/Treatments: Plenty of clutter to help reduce standing

waves. :-)

Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Varied; music from classical to country and

rock (up the late 1980's - any rock after

that sounds like horrid noise to my ears), show tunes,

etc. Favorites include Loreen McKennitt (I only have this on CDs, not vinyl, alas),

Beetles, Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London,

Wagner, Frank Zappa, Rocky Horror Picture

Show, Mahler's Symphony No. 1 (and other

pastoral music with distant horn calls, etc.), Faith Hill, Fleetwood Mac, etc.

Rumors exist that I may have a few disco

albums, but such rumors may possibly be

unsubstantiated. ;-)

System Goals/Comments: To upgrade my woofers to have larger fmax

and to lower the low-end response from

25HZ down to less than 20Hz). Also need to

replace the filter caps in the Phase Linear

400 with larger caps and add a three-wire

power cord, replace old electrolytic caps

in the Bogens and add an electronic crossover

for biamping the system.

System Strengths: It sounds reasonably good to my ears; fairly

good bass, clear and strong midrange presence, crystal-clear highs.

System Weaknesses: Bass could be a bit deeper; need to replace

the woofers. Highs are reasonably good, but still not quite what they could be, so

I'll probably try different drivers on the

tweeter horns. Could also use some work

on the lower-midrange, so I may add cabints with eight to ten inch midrange

drivers for the 400Hz to 600Hz range, or else

upgrade to better compression horn

drivers for midrange horns.

Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Electronic music/DIY synthesis, equestrian

activities, vintage computers, writing.
