kvk's Living Room System
IP Address: 155.44.217.96 Last Update: January 24, 2008 at 11:00:34
Amplifier: Kenwood Receiver KR-470, 2x40 Watts bought at a garage sale for exactly $1.

The controls were awful; it was unusable but some clean-up with a can of RatShack tuner cleaner and now it sounds fine.

Total investment $8 for a receiver that was $315 in 1980. (That's like +$600 in today's cash).
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): None
Speakers: 1 Pair RadioShack Minimus 7.

1 Wharfdale PPS-1 Sub-woofer.
(I got it off ReturnBuy for $34 including shipping. It's a center woofer really, goes down to 50 or 60hz and Xovers at 130hz. It's a pretty good match for the Minumus-7 which go down to about 100hz.

Since I found the Minimus 7 in a box of junk I had in the basement from college, it's a sat-sub system that cost exactly $32.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: My first Technics CD player I bought in the early 80s. Forget what model. It doesn't make any difference. The main system went to a DVD player so this got left in the living room. Owned it so long I've depreciated it to $0 value.
Turntable/Phono Stage: Yeah, I bought one in the mid-80s right before they completely disappeared from the consumer stores. I forget what kind. Came cheap with a cartridge, maybe $150 total. I think it may be an Audophon cartridge.
Other Source(s): None
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: 14ga speaker wire.
Cheap RCS cable inter-connects that came out of a box in the basement. I doubt they cost $2 new 18 years ago.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Cheap brown extension cord :-)
Room Size (LxWxH): 16 x 16 x 7.5
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Bluegrass/jazz/blues/gratefuldead
System Goals/Comments: I really should replace the $2 interconnects with $10 interconnects.

The turn table is not hooked up right now but I really should hook it up and listen to what little old vinyl I do have.
System Strengths: Sounds very very good for what it cost.

$1 Receiver (garage sale)
$7.99 Tuner Cleaner (RatShack)
$32 sub-woofer (ReturnBuy.com)
$0-main speakers (found in basement)
$0-CD player (bought too long ago to care)

$40.99 total investment.
System Weaknesses: The subwoofer isn't center and since it's up around 130hz, the base is asymmetric.
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Skiing and Ski Instruction
Mandolin
Bluegrass Jamming
Software Architect by trade.
