AM's Main System
Last Update: January 31, 2003 at 15:18:36 IP Address: 209.89.235.85
Amplifier: Musical Fidelity A3 integrated
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): none
Speakers: Mission M73i
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Sony SCD-XE670 (cheap CD/SACD player)
Turntable/Phono Stage: VPI Hw-19 MkII, Grado Reference arm, Grado Reference Sonata
Other Source(s): none
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: 35'(ouch!) of AR OFC 12 guage for the speakers, Grado cable for the TT, AR for the SACD.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Brick Wall surge protector/filter
Tweaks: nothing but 4 cones to replace the feet on the TT
Room Size (LxWxH): 20 x 12 x 7' to 9'
Room Comments/Treatments: House is too small for a dedicated listening room and my wife is not keen on major changes to the living room (which is where the system is). Room is fairly bright, with windows along one wall and wood floors. Drapes help tame the brightness from the left, and I'm thinking about adding an area rug to help some more, but limited experiments with a rug didn't seem to have much effect.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Large-scale orchestral, jazz (50's - 60's), pop/rock (Sonic Youth, Bjork, The Clash, Blur, etc.)
System Goals/Comments: Given the limitations of the listening room (it's often quite noisy - fridge only 15 feet away, forced-air heating, dog snoring, computer hard drive whirring in the next room, etc.), I'm not too preoccupied with the last little bit of detail or resolution. I'm looking for a powerful, non-fatiguing and tonally-balanced sound, with decent soundstaging and imaging. I especially like a nice deep soundstage.
System Strengths: For the money, I think it does a good job of meeting all my goals.
System Weaknesses: Can sound a little boomy in the lower midrange (speakers are along the long wall, and furniture constraints mean that I can't get them out more than a foot from the wall). Not a big deal though - it's only slightly bothersome on some pop recordings, almost never with classical or jazz.
Video/HT System: None
