neilium's plush-tone System
Last Update: October 10, 2002 at 13:05:31 IP Address: 216.177.98.18
Amplifier: SEUL 6L6 amp (design from J.C. Morrison's "Fi Primer", with a couple of changes.) Pentode output with pentode driver = good cheap fun.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): 37 linestage with parafeed transformer output.
Speakers: Vandersteen Model 1's
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Phillips CD-880 w/Audio Alchemy Dac-in-the-box w/homebuilt regulated power supply.
Turntable/Phono Stage: Empire 208, Rega RB200 arm with new counterweight, Denon 103 cartridge. Monolithic PS-1. Experimenting with valve phono stage.
Other Source(s): Mac w/Protools, tape deck, tuner
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: DIY copper foil tape spkr cables, homemade interconnects w/Cardas and Vampire RCAs
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): none
Tweaks: Brazilian sugarcane brandy, lime juice and a teaspoon of sugar shaken vigorously and served over crushed ice. Improved imaging, deeper bass, even the wife noticed.
Room Size (LxWxH): 12 x 11 x 8
Room Comments/Treatments: The challenge of apartment dwelling
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Love old blues and jazz. Recently fond of electronica and Japanese clubpop. Learning more about classical, romantic, and baroque periods. Slap bass, smooth jazz, and 1812 overtures need not apply.
System Goals/Comments: simple circuits. appreciation of classic designs and components. maximum joy for minimum outlay. an outlet for my tinkering.
System Strengths: stays out of the way of the music. very pleasurable low-level listening (important in an apartment)
(3/5/01) Addition of Wharfedale speaks: pretty much the same, just more of it.
with new linestage: just that much closer.
(10/10/02)Vandersteens and new amp - punchier, better bass, not quite as breezy as the 45 amp w/Goodman 201's, but, hey, I don't miss it at all.
System Weaknesses: ugly, ungainly size. I miss the days when I didn't care about these things.
(3/5/01) Addition of Wharfedale speaks: Still ungainly, not as ugly, though.
(10/10/02) All the ugliness is now hidden in a beautiful old radio cabinet that some pervert gutted and left for dead. Much much better.
