Amplifier: | two 99% mint mcintosh 40s... more details about these guys coming soon... but they came out of hearing test lab from somewhere in Mass. and have been behind glass since they were born. Currently trying to figure out if they need better tubes.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): | mcintosh c-20 (not using case). has scratchy pots. Should I just use Radio Shack tuner control, or is there something better?
Speakers: | 2 electro-voice centurions. these things are near mint and any dents or scratches are my fault. I've tried to spray tuner control in the the scratchy pots with limited success. On a good day, they are beautiful, detail-oriented, and tight, like a good secretary.

CD Player/DAC: | tascam rack-mountable CD-A700. this piece on loan from the recording studio... until a more suitable CD player is found. it does the job though. |
Turntable/Phono Stage: | Rega Planar 3 with Grado Platinum cartridge. neither the motor nor the cartridge is sheilded... so ive got a slight hum problem on the inside tracks. Anyone have a Rega/Grado combo with the same problem? was this a dumb move on my part? am wondering about Mu metal... where it goes

Other Source(s): | none
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: | audioquest coral (1 meter) in to each mc40; audioquest diamondback (.5 m) from Tascam to C-20; using the standard Rega rcas.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): | just a Belkin powerstrip from Home Depot. the big metal blue one.
Tweaks: | i just had carpeting installed.
Room Size (LxWxH): | 12 x 12 x 10
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): | electro, 50s-70s jazz, Command records, electronic experimental, 50s hi-fi & exotic stuff
System Goals/Comments: | i want to find the right/best tubes for the mcintosh gear. right now ive got a range of stuff from NOS RCA 6L6GC to cheap 6L6GC (probably chinese) to a 12AX7 labled "Computer Tube - West Germany"
System Strengths: | have one beer. let em warm up. find the sweet spot, close your eyes... and you might just be there.
System Weaknesses: | I'd like to be there without having to have the beer first. And one of the mc40s has a ground-type of buzz that goes away 50% when you touch the housing. both channels are a little noisy. Im not sure where to attack the problem.
