Tweaks: | N/A thus far |
Room Comments/Treatments: | I am currently in a small 2 bedroom apartment with a long, shallow living room. Less-than-ideal listening conditions but I make do. I can always move and someday will so I won't let that deprive me from having a big, bad audio system ;) |
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): | Classic and modern rock, classic R&B, blues, jazz, some classical |
System Goals/Comments: | Good audio on a budget along with home theatre. My goals were clean sound while still having 'punch' when desired: soft classical and quiet jazz should sound refined while still having enough power for movies like 'Das Boot' and for hard rock at concert-like levels when desired. |
System Strengths: | Plenty of power on tap in spite of watt-guzzling planar/ribbon speakers. Deep, broad sound stage places the band 10-15 feet from the listener. There is no replacement for displacement yet this setup still sounds quite good at tame volume levels. |
System Weaknesses: | Huge! Really big ribbon panel speakers requiring heavy amplification. This is one big setup - good thing I'm not married yet! Highs are detailed but could be a bit more crisp (the 'Maggies'are 80's vintage) - I'd rather this than too much brightness. AC Power in apt. is very dirty - amp chassis (not output) humming intermittently - will try isolation transformer soon. Non-optimal listening room in rented apartment. Heavy amp puts out a lot of heat. |
Video/HT System: Integrated
TV/Projector: | 32" Samsung HDTV |
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: | HK AVR65 Receiver as rear amp + DTS proc. (with the 5802 in front I'll need more rear power) |
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): | Rear: Polk Audio mini speakers (can't remember model) Sub: Mirage FRX-S15 15' 18Hz powered floor-firing, twin rear ported |
Sources (DVD/VCR): | DVD: Malata region-free 'RCE/REA OK' (note I've hooked its digital out to my Adcom GCD-750's digital in) VCR: RCA 4 head Hi-Fi (mundane) |
Comments on HT System: | The sub is a full-time unit also used for audio. Its bass is fast enough to keep up with the magneplanars. |
