uw312@aol.com's Main System - Entry Level Analogue System
Last Update: July 31, 2004 at 08:49:52 IP Address: 64.12.116.77
Amplifier: Cary V12i 50/100 watt amp with 'i' and 'r' upgrade powers the left and right mids / treble. (Svetlana EL34, Mullard EL84, RCA 12BZ7.) Sunfire Symphonic Reference provides 500 watts into the mains bass section.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Audio by Van Alstine (AVA) - Transcendence 7 (EC) w/ phono. I am also using the Channel Islands passive preamp between AVA unit and Sunfire amp to control gain.
Speakers: VMPS RM-40 w/ FST. Pair of Hsu subs. Headphones are Sennheiser's HD-590 (underrated but better than 580 or 600, IMO)
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Sim Audio Moon Eclipse / Rotel 991 CDP / Musical Fidelity A308cr / Audiomeca Obsession / Old Pioneer 1-bit mega changers
Turntable/Phono Stage: Basis 1400 / RB-250 / Aurum Alpha
Other Source(s): JVC 3 head deck / JVC reel to reel
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Speakers are bi-wired with Cat 5 DIY using Belden (54 conductors to both low and mid/highs) / Interconnect are Wasatch 103U and VooDoo Silver Reference
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Monster Power 2000 Voltage Regulator / Sanus Platinum 5 rack shelf / Chris VH Flavors 1,2 & 4. Richard Gray Substation 4.
Tweaks: Mapleshade brass cones under CDP, pre-amp, and amps, all of which are sitting on 2' maple on top of compresed cork.
Room Size (LxWxH): 26 x 18 x 14
Room Comments/Treatments: Room is a large loft, with many soft furnishings and carpet.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Vocals --> James Taylor, Jimmy Buffett, Carly Simon, Nicolette Larson, Karla Bonoff Rock ---> AC/DC, Rush, Kix, Kid Rock, ZZ Top
System Goals/Comments: All in all, I believe it is a remarkable sounding system since I was able to get good prices on most components. Audio portion was put together for about $20,000. Video portion added another $5000.
System Strengths: Not bad sound for an entry level system. Can play loud while remaining clear and realistic. Many people talk about re-creating concernt-like levels....this comes close (does 110dB easily). Puts out sound in far corners of my loft. This system can do rock music well, which is not always easy.
System Weaknesses: Can be a bit uni-directional without presenting a very wide soundstage.
Video/HT System: Separate
TV/Projector: Mitsubishi 55' RPTV 55859 Platinum
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: Yamaha Integrated Amp DSP 1092A
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): PSB Center 2, PSB Ambient 2 (surrounds), Hsu subs x 2
Sources (DVD/VCR): Phillips DVD
Other HT Gear: None
Comments on HT System: I'm not a huge movie fan, so it is more than adequate for the use it gets (mostly, by my friends)
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Collect Handguns and the Shooting Sports, Collect Arcade Pinball Machines. Flying around town - Acura NSX Type R
