NiceSmokes's Main System System
Last Update: September 14, 2003 at 21:50:57 IP Address: 12.250.152.141
Amplifier: Dennon DRA-545R -- My wife bought this for me when my NAD died several years ago. Can't complain for a gift.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): None
Speakers: KLH-1 -- classics I have owned since 197? Truely underrated speakers that were way ahead of their time.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Denon DCM-340 -- gift from my wife -- you guessed it - with my Receiver. Don't use it though....
Turntable/Phono Stage: Pioneer 1978ish turntable with Ortafon (sp?) cartridge gathering dust in basement
Other Source(s): Rio Receiver -- yeah loossy format mp3 but kicks ass to spin 10 hours of music with a flick of a button. Also, sad to say, much better source than the original source I had in the 70's.
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Some pretty heavy guage speaker wire I think I found at Home Depot. I read a lot of reviews about branded cabling, and based on my current setup, felt that simply limiting loss (on a < 20 ft run) was the main issue -- and not a significant one at that. Need to Upgrade source before I worry about cabling...
Room Size (LxWxH): 30 x 18 x 10
Room Comments/Treatments: Lots of toys acting as sound buffers; barney tapes and gum on floor to create constantly changing reflective sound sources. Soon to have 5 kids 6 & under
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Sick of classic rock; enjoyed alternative for a few years and still do to a point (1/2 to 3/4 of a song); still love Mozart (horn concertos in particular) in limited doses; enjoy some pop stuff for a few minutes; eminem amuses me; want to enjoy jazz but after a while it just bores me; I do enjoy a bit of Swing, some Dixie but how much of that can you really listen to; a bit of raaga (it cracks me up that the theme to Arthur the kid's cartoon is raaga -- I think by Ziggy Marley performs it); tropical music is good with a drink in the evening; generally having a hard time finding something worth listening to these days...
System Goals/Comments: Get it up and running. It's been mothballed for a few years, and I am just setting it up again.
System Strengths: KLH-1's. Don't know why I have never heard much about these from anyone else, but they have a great range, are clean, and look good to boot.

I bought these from a friend who worked at Pacific Stereo, and got them for 50% off list from the manufacturer. He sold them to a friend for $660. I bought the KLH-2's for about $450 for the pair at 1/2 price in the same manufacturer's deal. My buddy thought the 1's were to big and traded me even for them! What a great deal -- $1200 speakers for $450! And for a guy making $2.37 per hour working as assistant stock boy at Pacific Stereo -- you do the math. I married my girlfriend from college, and I am sticking with my first "real" speakers.

Anyone have any idea what they would compare to today? I have been out of the loop for so long I have no idea what the new stuff sounds like.

System Weaknesses: No good music to listen to...

Probably the lossy mp3 music, but I think that format is seriously underrated in this forum, since it provides the ability to actually listen to your system when there would not be the time to go through your CD's / Albums / 8-tracks [ ;) ]. Also, frankly, many sources are poorly recorded, pressed, whatever, and rooms are very sub-optimal.

25 years ago at the stereo store, we used to get a kick out of people who would bring in their bose speakers saying a speaker was blown, and find that a million drivers were completely gone! They couldn't even tell! At least I KNOW I can't hear the difference right now (see hobbies below -- lots of kids).

I would be very interested in feedback from members about how to ease back into true audio for a guy who has been out of it for about 100 years.

Video/HT System: Integrated
TV/Projector: run of the mill
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: "integrated" i.e., in-tv speakers
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): stuff in boxes...
Sources (DVD/VCR): dvd, vcr, typical run of the mill stuff
Other HT Gear: bought a screen on ebay but that's it so far
Comments on HT System: still working on my wife to set one up...
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Consultant (software, accounting). Current interests include having kids. Second set of twins (girls this time; boys last time) due in Nov 2003.
