dbrotzen's Tact/DIY Electrostatic Hybrid System
IP Address: 85.225.204.251 Last Update: January 03, 2013 at 08:42:24
Amplifier: Tact Millennium Mk II power-dac driving a 6.5 ft flat ESL panel, Tact's M2150 on the bass
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Tact RCS 2.2x AAA. With the Room Correction preamp most of the room interaction is taken care of, as is frequency repsonse of the speakers - dial in what you want - flat or enhanced in certain bands. The 2.2x also functions as a digital cross-over - so there's seamless integration (at 360hz!!) between the panels and the dynamic bass. And - this is part of the beauty of this fantastic product - I can try out and dial in other x-over frequencies and slopes. It also features a real time parametric equalizer. This product deserves to be the best selling high-end audio product in the world!
Speakers: DIY flat panel ESLs (360 hz on up)
2x Tact W210. Flat panels sharply angled toward listening position. The W210's (each unit has two 10 inch bass elements, linear to 4khz) placed in the corners toward the cement wall
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Squeezebox Duet and occasionally Tascam CD-RW2000 working as transport, and clock synced to RCS2.2x
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Supra speaker cables and XLR interconnects (have used IlluminationsD60 interconnect before using XLR config)
Tweaks: Spikes on panels, which are suspended between ceiling and floor
Room Size (LxWxH): 800cm x 800cm x 220cm
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Pop, rock, jazz, latin, some classical
System Goals/Comments: Three dimensionality is #1 goal, transparency, rhythm.
System Strengths: Three dimensionality beyond belief - voices are extremely well placed in soundscape - usually straight ahead and about 180cm/6feet up, and about 2 meters BEHIND the wall. Instruments easy to place as well. Compared to other electrostatic hybrids, this system is better integrated than any I've ever heard(M-L, Innersound). Deep bass.
System Weaknesses: Sometimes too transparent - you can e.g. hear glitches in mixes, miking, poor channel separation in digital mixes, etc.
Video/HT System: None
