dr.joe's Bedroom (first of three) System
Last Update: March 24, 2005 at 13:02:58 IP Address: 198.96.2.93
Amplifier: Meitner MTR-101 monaural amps (1990; factory rebuilt with new circuit 2003); 100 rms into 8 ohms, 200 into 4 ohms; 35 amps peak current delivery; single-ended inputs only
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Meitner PA-6 (1988-89) with factory Plus upgrade in 2000; three line level inputs, (including MM/high output MC phono), plus tape play and record; separate power supply
Speakers: Tannoy System 15 DMT II (15-inch dual concentric, 95-98 dB sensitivity, 200 w continuous power handling; extraordinary DMT cabinets; 38 Hz to 25 kHz +/- 3 dB)
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Sony SCD-777ES (1999) with Vacuum State Electronics discrete analogue output stage and upgraded parts from PartsConnexion (2003, 2005).
Turntable/Phono Stage: Technics SP-10 mk II (1980s) with Origin Live modified Rega RB-250 arm (2001) and Reson Reca MM cartridge (2001); mounted on welded steel McCurdy broadcast stand (1980s), which in turn sits on 2.5 inch thick MDF base, which in turn sits on heavy castors. The PA-6+ has a very fine phono stage, but currently I'm experimenting with a highly modified New York Audio Labs Moscode Super-It stand alone tube phono stage.
Other Source(s): Luxman T-02 tuner (mid-1980s)
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Mixture of Canare StarQuad microphone cable terminated with Neutrik ProFi RCA plugs and Signal Cable biwire speaker cable made from Belden 89259 and Analysis Plus banana plugs.
Long interconnects (8 ft.) and short speaker cables (2 feet).
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): OneAC line conditioner (isolation transformer) for all components except power amps
Tweaks: Everything is bluetacked to what it sits on. All components, except the amps, fit into the rack under the turntable; the speakers sit on 14-inch stands made out of cedar four by fours and MDF.
Room Size (LxWxH): 15 x 12 x 8
Room Comments/Treatments: Rented accommodation, no acoustic treatment yet other than book-lined walls, heavy carpet and lots of pillows scattered about.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Classic rock (e.g., Stones, Doors, Beatles, Who, Traffic), East Indian classical and devotional music, small jazz combos, especially with female vocalists (e.g., Patricia Barber); Anglo-Jamaican dub (LKJ, Bush Chemists, Dub Syndicate, Twilight Circus Sound System), some electronic dub (e.g., some Bill Laswell), 70s jazz-rock (e.g., Passport, some Gong, Nucleus), some 'world music' (e.g., Sussan Deyhim)
System Goals/Comments: What would please me most right now is more and better priced SA CDs and DVD-A CDs. I think the new formats have great potential, but not until all new releases are all released as hybrids will they make much difference in the larger scheme of things.
System Strengths: These are not 20 Hz speakers, though I don't really consider that a weakness; I've tried subwoofers (and am in the process of building some from JBL 2235 drivers), but so far prefer the system without a sub.
System Weaknesses: I think my room and inability to properly acoustically treat it are by far the greatest weakness in my system.
Video/HT System: Separate
TV/Projector: I have some kind of 27' Sony Wega that I received as a gift. I watch movies and documentaries from time to time, but have no urge to move into HT or surround sound.
