jimmyrod's Magnepan 3.6R System
Last Update: October 03, 2004 at 15:33:13 IP Address: 12.22.57.242
Amplifier: VTL 225 triode watt mono-blocks 16 KT90 output tubes

Also Bryston 7BST mono blocks

Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Audible Illusions 3A latest edition with MC gold phono.
Speakers: Magnepan 3.6R built in Jan 2002. No major mods yet!!Bypassed tweeter attenuator cable with Copper jumpers.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: EAD DSP7000 Mk III with DSP7000 transport.

Also long term borrowing Shanling T-100 with Level one mods. Very nice

Turntable/Phono Stage: Audible Illusions Gold Phono. Still working on vinyl rig.
Other Source(s): Magnalab FT101 tuner
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Cardas Golden Cross throughout. Seems to work very well in my set up and rather lively room. Tried Audience AU24 which were very good, but overall preferred the Cardas GC.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): 5 Dedicated 20 amp circuits 10 ft. from junction box. Hubbel outlets.
Tweaks: Minor sound treatments on rear wall.
Room Size (LxWxH): 23 x 15 x 9
Room Comments/Treatments: The room is OK fairly live with Spanish tiled floors and textured sheetrock walls. Large area run covers most of the floor. Walls are painted with various pictures. Speaker are set up on the short wall inside speaker to inside speaker is 6.5 apart 4.5ft from the back wall. Can not go further into the room due to fireplace on the side. The room is diffinitely the weakest point. It also opens up to the Kitchen on the back wall. Really the room is more like 15 wide by 35ft long. I tried placing the speakers in our larger living/dining room. They sound much better, but NO WAF also no dedicated outlets in that room.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Jazz, vocals, 70's rock Some classical anything well recorded. Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Calexico you name it.
System Goals/Comments: Realistic reproduction of music. I do not expect to be able to reproduce a live concert's SPL, but at least maintain the feeling of someone is playing in front of you.
System Strengths: Large, but not overly exaggerated soundstage. Incredible midrange, sweet highs.
System Weaknesses: Imaging is not it strongest suit. Could be placement related. Minor sacrfice to get the midrange I am currently able to hear.
Video/HT System: Separate
TV/Projector: For now a 300lb. 1995 Mitsubishi 40 inch tube. Recessed into wall such that nothign is between speakers. As $$ permits I'll move to a DLP projector. Need to address lighting as well.
Processor/Receiver/Amplifiers: Currently a Marantz SR8000 receiver. Prior I had a full EAD system including the Signature processor/PM2000 5 channel. Down turn in Silicon valley forced sale.
Speakers (Center, Surrounds, Sub): NHT Superones all around with a Genesis 900 sub. Prior was all Aerial system with 10t's, CC3B and SR3 surrounds. Same issue above as to why I no longer have them. Also at one point in time I had a full Genesis 750 surround system. Very nice.
Sources (DVD/VCR): Panasonic DVD player forget model, but it was one of the best rated a year ago. $135.
Other HT Gear: Monster cable, Dedicated power outlets overkill for current HT system.
Comments on HT System: Enjoyable for watching a weekly video. Does not compare with the dynamics of my Aerial system I had., but it only cost me $700. That less then my speaker cables for my 2 channel system.
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Attending various concerts, Hiking, Jogging, Golf of course listening to my stereo.
