Sasquatch's Cheapster2 System
Last Update: December 08, 2004 at 14:47:18 IP Address: 12.216.205.247
Amplifier: Homebrew two-stage fleepower amp: 12sn7gta Tungsol, RCA 13em7, 6ca7, battery biased
The Tungsol tube is essentially perfect.
Pawn shop Marantz receiver drives the bass speakers.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): None. I can't understand the need for a preamp.
Speakers: Folded back open baffles (2'x4') with full range 8' Bogen ceiling speakers as main drivers. Bottom octave (80-40) filled in by old RCA 12' alnico/paper driver, top octave RCA 3' alnico/paper driver, both pulled from console.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Toshiba with Swenson Mods
Turntable/Phono Stage: Technics SL-3980 with Grado Black

Phono stage is a tweaked Little Rat

Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: Homebrew: Cat 5e for CD, magnet wire for turntable, 22 g magnet wire for speaker cable
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Power filter on the toshiba
Tweaks: Damar on drivers, polyfill batting curtain behind the speakers
Room Comments/Treatments: None. The open baffles don't interact with the room as much as closed baffles I had.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Rock, classical, country
System Goals/Comments: Best sound for the lowest cost
System Strengths: Extremely relaxing and musical. Good, dynamic bass (kick drums are amazing). Excellent integration throughout the frequency range. Slight FR problems (Peak somewhere in the vocal range, slight thinness in the lower midrange).
System Weaknesses: Dynamics of the main driver is a little recessed compared to the bass driver.
Video/HT System: None
Other Interests/Hobbies/Occupation: Assistant Professor of Experimental Psychology
