Amplifier: | Rotel RA972 60W Integrated Amplifier w/remote option |
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): | None |
Speakers: | B&W 601 S2 bookshelf speakers mounted on sand-filled Target stands |

CD Player/DAC: | Old Sony ES 508ESD single-disc CD player w/ fake wood side panels. I believe it was built around 1990-91. These CD players were not cheap when they were new. Surprisingly strong sound from an old Sony, and it is far-and-away superior to that garbage NAD 5-disc I used to own. The only stand-out shortcomings are that the treble is a little bit soft- sometimes I need to turn on that EQ for a tiny boost- and the mids could occasionally be a little more involving, but either way I can't complain because I received it in exchange for a bottle of Jack Daniels. For $20 you would be quite pleased with the sound quality.. My next CD player will be a Rega Planet. |
Turntable/Phono Stage: | Thorens turntable w/Grado Blue cartridge (not currently in use). No phono stage as of yet, though I've had my sights set on the Rotel for a long time. |
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: | Interconnects: Tributaries Cable DCA-100 At $50, these interconnects are just unstoppable. These best cables that cost 3x as much. My only gripe is that they are joined. Tossed the old AudioQuests out the window. Speaker Cable: nothing special, just good-quality monster cable. I'll get something higher-quality when I upgrade to better speakers. |
Room Comments/Treatments: | Large Room- in fact, it's too large for my 601s!! |
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): | Classical music. |
System Goals/Comments: | My main goal is to switch over to floorstanders, but as there are numerous, numerous speakers in my price range, it will be quite some time before I reach a decision. I also am trying to find the best CD player for $500-600. Perhaps a Rotel or a used Rega Planet? |
System Strengths: | Wonderful mid-range, very nice sound stage at lower volumes. |
System Weaknesses: | My stereo is currently in a rather large room. 601s are bookshelves and therefore have their limitations when it comes to heavy bass and complex passages, aside from being in a room that is far too big..
