Amplifier: Antique Sound Labs AQ1002 valve power amp from kit for mid / highs. Myiaby VP120S valve power amp, also from Kit, for mid-lows. Rotel RB 985 transistor power amp for low bass, the whole lot controlled by a Pioneer D23 Electronic 4 way crossover from the Seventies.
Preamplifier (or None if Integrated): Beard CA35 Valve MC/MM and line pre-amp with Stepped attenuattor volume control.
Speakers: Home made 3 way (4 drivers) with Visaton TL16 horn tweeter, Dynaudio D54AF in Edgar Horn 500 hz mid-range, Visaton TIW 400 for mid-bass, and another Visaton TIW 400 for low-bass bellow 100 hz. The mid and low bass units on large Jensen-Onken lead lined cabinets.
Sources:
CD Player/DAC: Sony SACD BX 770 and Philips CDR 880 basically to transfer LPs to Cd for my friends who are willing to get rid of their LPs, as long as I give them back in CD format. ( Fair trade in most cases )
Turntable/Phono Stage: Thorens TD 124 on Home made Plinth, Highly modified Rega RB 300 tonearm, with Express-Machining rear stub, counter weight, and VTA adjuster. Cartridge is a Benz Micro MC20E high output moving coil.
Other Source(s): Sony St-S370 Tuner for casual listening.
Other Accessories/Room/Misc.:
Speaker Cables/Interconnects: An assortment of Audioquest, VDH, QED, Rega, and a couple of home made interconnects too. Nothing too fancy, but good enough price/quality ratio.
Other (Power Conditioner, Racks etc.): Nitty-Gritty Basic LP washing machine, 3 locally made (Megaudio)Power filters. Cant remember the make of the 2 racks supporting all the electronics.
Tweaks: In the near future I hope to upgrade both the internal and external cables of the Rega arm.
Room Size (LxWxH): 6 mts. x 4 mts. x 2.8 mts.
Room Comments/Treatments: I am lucky enough to have quite a large "L" shaped living room, and one of the "legs of the L ", with an area of 24 square meters, is a dedicated listening room. No acoustic treatments so far.
Music Preferences and Comments:
Music Used (Genre/Selections): Large scale orchestral/symphonic classical music, mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries, and Pop-Rock of my youth, Late sixties - early seventies. An ocasional Jazz session is also welcome.
System Goals/Comments: To portray my orchestral favourite type of music with the required sense of scale.
System Strengths: Power and scale, instrument definition and separation, micro and macro dinamics, lack of compression as the crescendos compress the air mollecules in the room, and one feels them in ones stomach.
System Weaknesses: Bass can sometimes be overblown. I will have to investigate into room modes and try some corrective measures, cash permitting. In pure hi-fi jargon the image could be better. I dont really care, this so called image is not something I can really distinguish either at a rock or symphonic live concert. Some roughness around the edges might probably be cured with a better cartridge. The Benz Micro MC20E is nice, but definitely out of its league in the context of the system.
Video/HT System: None
